Jonathan Frakes, best known as an actor and director on Star Trek: The Next Generation, has responded to the announcement of a new Star Trek movie from Paramount. The film, developed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, will be a fresh start, with no connection to previous Star Trek films or television series.
Jonathan Frakes is a well-known director of Star Trek films, having directed Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection. Many of the actors on Paramount+’s Star Trek shows consider him their favorite director. He’s also directed many episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and will direct the next-to-last episode of the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Jonathan Frakes found out about the new Star Trek movie and the cancellation of Star Trek 4 – the one with Chris Pine and the original Enterprise crew – while appearing on the TrekMovie All Access Star Trek podcast with Kitty Swink to talk about PanCan and Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. You can see his reaction to this surprising news below.
“Wow. That IS big news.”
You know, it’s funny – Jonathan Frakes, who’s directed a ton of Star Trek, immediately clocked Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley as the directors of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Being a fellow director and a big movie fan myself, it’s cool how quickly those connections are made. Apparently, Frakes gave them some advice, knowing what it’s like to be behind the camera on a big franchise like that.
We hope everything goes well for them – that they have a long and successful run, stay safe, finish within budget, and meet their deadlines.
While the fourth Star Trek movie faced many delays, Jonathan Frakes contacted producer J.J. Abrams to offer his directing services. Ultimately, that didn’t pan out, and Frakes continued to direct episodes of Star Trek television shows, as well as other projects.
Jonathan Frakes clearly appreciates the work of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. They’re the writers behind Spider-Man: Homecoming and Horrible Bosses, and they’ve also directed films like Vacation, Game Night, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Jonathan Frakes most recently directed an episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds called “A Space Adventure Hour,” and he considered it the best television he’d ever made. So, he was understandably surprised when fans had very different opinions about the episode, which was a playful murder mystery set in a holodeck and a tribute to the original Star Trek and its creator, Gene Roddenberry.
Jonathan Frakes, a devoted Star Trek fan himself, is cautiously optimistic about the upcoming Star Trek movie. He acknowledges that a film not connected to previous series and movies is a significant risk, but points out that Star Trek: The Next Generation – which introduced a completely new crew separate from Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock – was also a gamble that ultimately succeeded.
