In this week’s edition of “The Daily Show,” host Jon Stewart adopted a more somber approach, fiercely criticizing President Donald Trump over the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
To begin the show, Stewart clarified the circumstances of Garcia’s case. As per the nighttime commentator, Garcia is an “immigrant without documents from El Salvador,” but also a family man, being a father and a spouse to an American woman. However, unexpectedly, he was deported to El Salvador last month due to an “administrative mistake,” as stated by the Department of Justice. Stewart further revealed that Garcia might have had the opportunity to return to the U.S., since Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele visited the White House on Monday, and humorously suggested that Garcia could hitch a ride back with him.
Stewart pointed out that Garcia doesn’t necessarily need the middle seat. He might as well take the window or aisle, for all we know, he’d leap across if required. Unfortunately, Bukele only showed up at the White House with his Miami nightclub attire and a bunch of reasons not to.”
Stewart suggested that Garcia doesn’t strictly need the middle seat as he might jump over to sit next to you regardless. Sadly, Bukele arrived at the White House only wearing his Miami club promoter clothes and carrying excuses instead.)
In my critique, I’d rephrase it as follows:
During the screening, Stewart showcased the exchange between Bukele and Trump. Upon being inquired about Garcia’s potential return to the U.S., Bukele quipped, “How could I possibly sneak a terrorist into the United States?
To put it bluntly, Stewart stated with a solemn air, ‘It’s quite clear they are reveling in this situation – both of them,’ referring to our president and theirs. He continued, ‘They seem to say, “We can’t intervene. I suppose we must let him languish in prison, despite his undeserving fate.”‘
He went on to say, “It seems you all aren’t concerned about this particular individual. I’m referring to [Trump and Bukele], yet there is someone else who does care about this person. However, without any substantial proof that you intend to present, you casually brand him as a terrorist.
Later on, Stewart emphasized that Trump appeared entirely unfazed by the Garcia predicament and instead showed greater interest in the queries posed by CNN reporter Catlin Collins.
Afterward, a news segment aired featuring Collins addressing Trump, “You stated that if the Supreme Court mandated someone’s return, you would comply.” Trump responded, “Why don’t you simply say, ‘Aren’t we doing a great job of keeping criminals out of our country.’ Why can’t you just say that? You keep repeating it. That’s why your viewership is decreasing now.
Afterward, Stewart played another news snippet where a reporter inquired whether Trump would consider expelling American citizens. Trump’s reply was, “When it comes to a domestic criminal, I have no qualms…I’m referring to truly wicked individuals. Extremely wicked individuals.
Stewart remarked, ‘He intends to take that action against American citizens.’ He added, ‘I believe the hosts of ‘The View’ are about to encounter an administrative oversight.’ Frankly, I didn’t think he would become this authoritarian so quickly. I truly did not expect it. I apologize.
