Jon Stewart Jokes Trump’s Defense Secretary Was ‘Distracted by ‘White Lotus” When Accidentally Leaking War Plans to The Atlantic: ‘Oopsie Poopsie’

This week on “The Daily Show,” I, as a movie buff who loves a good political thriller, found myself squirming in my seat as Jon Stewart took aim at President Trump’s defense secretary, Pete Hegseth. The reason? An alleged leak of top-secret U.S. war plans to The Atlantic.

Before delving into the upcoming part, Stewart humorously prepared the audience by stating, “I’ve got a speedy update about an administration that yet again seems to be executing their strategies with skill and efficiency.

Afterward, Stewart presented a sequence of news clips that depicted the predicament at hand. It was revealed that Hegseth had accidentally added Goldberg to a Signal group conversation intended for discussing strategies against Huthi rebels in Yemen. The individuals involved in this chat, as per Goldberg’s account of the incident published on Monday, included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, and Goldberg himself.

Stewart exclaimed with surprise, “My, my! In my time, if a journalist needed leaked war documents, it required building relationships, clandestine meetings in dimly lit garages, and ultimately, earning trust through hard work. Nowadays, it seems like all you need is to wait for the National Security Advisor to be engrossed in ‘White Lotus’ while setting up a group chat named ‘Bomb Yemen’, and wonder if they’re sharing sensitive information instead of jesting!

Stewart went on to mention, “By the way, I might be included as well. I’m not sure since I rarely look at our group chats. One of my favorite messages from the entire conversation thread was sent by our defense secretary, who wrote, ‘We are maintaining operational security right now.’ For those unaware, ‘op-sec’ refers to operational security.” He made this statement in a group chat that included a journalist!

Stewart added that Goldberg “didn’t think it could be real” until Yemen was bombed.

As a movie enthusiast, that particular detail sparked a range of responses among the audience. With a wink and a smile, Stewart quipped, “Ah, did I dampen your spirits just now?
