As a follower and admirer of Jon M. Chu, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon reading about his recent life event. On one hand, I’m overjoyed for him and his family as they welcome their fifth child into the world. The arrival of a newborn is always a momentous occasion, especially when it coincides with a significant professional milestone like the premiere of “Wicked.

Jon M. Chu had a pretty good excuse for missing the premiere of “Wicked.”

Unfortunately, due to the birth of their fifth daughter on November 9, the director of the two-part musical spectacle was unable to attend the glamorous event in Los Angeles which took place on the same day as the pink and green festivities.

Chu shared on Instagram Stories that the movie he’s working on has been full of unexpected twists. Today, something he’s eagerly anticipated for quite some time has finally arrived: not just one but two new beginnings – a film and a little girl. Despite being unable to attend tonight’s ‘Wicked’ premiere with everyone, an early-morning change of plans happened around 4 AM…

Chu jokingly added that “no, we will not be naming her Galphaba.”

In my perspective as a movie enthusiast, the title cleverly references the central figures from “Wicked,” Elphaba, famously known as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good. This film is a screen adaptation of the cherished Broadway musical, unfolding events that precede, coincide with, and follow “The Wizard of Oz.” It showcases an unusual bond that’s fractured by outside influences. The ensemble features Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, headmistress at Shiz University, Ethan Slater as Boq, and Bowen Yang as Pfannee. Part one hits the big screen on November 22, with part two set for release in November 2025.

Tonight, let’s shower our exceptionally gifted cast and team with all the love they truly deserve. A special welcome to our soon-to-arrive newcomer who is about to join us, as we eagerly wait for her grand entrance! If she inherits just a sliver of the courage displayed by my wife, Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, or Marissa Edob, then she’ll surely conquer her own challenges someday.

The director, aged 45, behind “In the Heights” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” shared a picture of his L.A. premiere attire’s garment bag and joked: “Perhaps I should don this suit during the delivery instead?

Apart from themselves, Chu and his partner Kristin Hodge are parents to Willow (7 years old), Jonathan (5 years old), Ruby (3 years old), and Iggy (approximately 20 months). During the event’s opening, Chu posted a video featuring Hodge and their youngest child, accompanied by the message, “There’s something magical happening. Welcome to our lives, you’re going to excel. You have a lot of supportive magic-workers cheering for you.
