The series “Your Friends & Neighbors” on Apple TV+, which premiered on April 11, presents a life lesson through the character of Coop, a wealthy New York hedge fund manager played by Jon Hamm. Initially, it’s challenging to feel compassion for Coop when he loses his prestigious job and has only six months’ worth of funds left to sustain the extravagant lifestyle his family is accustomed to. Aren’t we supposed to say “Boo hoo” at this point?

This version maintains the same meaning but uses simpler language for a more casual reading experience.

The positive aspect is that Coop swiftly finds a method to keep raking in large sums of money, ensuring everyone remains oblivious to his recent misfortune. However, this “method” might lead him from living in a mansion to occupying a 6-by-8 prison cell if he’s found out. In other words, grand larceny isn’t profitable when you’re caught.

Hamm remarks that while Coop’s actions resemble Robin Hood’s in a way, there’s a significant difference: Coop doesn’t actually distribute his ill-gotten wealth to the less fortunate. However, he finds a degree of relatability in Coop. Not everyone is grappling with paying off hundreds of thousands of dollars for a mortgage or car repairs. Yet, Hamm suggests that although the monetary amounts may differ, these financial struggles resonate with many people.

Viewing it from Coop’s standpoint, there appear to be numerous individuals in the affluent neighborhood who possess grand houses full of high-priced items, which could go unnoticed and for whom he, an unassuming figure, would hardly be suspected as the culprit by even the police.

Jonathan Tropper, the show’s creator, points out that the man’s excuse for his actions is that he needs to provide for his family. However, there’s a difference between providing for your family and maintaining a 10,000-square foot home, he explains. This man refuses to acknowledge his failure and the shame it would bring upon him in the community, and he doesn’t want anyone to know that he lost his job. Now unable to pay his bills, he’s not willing to give up his materialistic lifestyle or the ambition instilled in him. So, this story will follow him as he learns to accept that his robberies are essentially an attempt to keep up with the Joneses and retaliate against a system that let him down.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, the first-person narrative in this series is remarkably crafted, allowing us an intimate peek into the mind of the complex character, Coop. It’s as if he’s confiding in us after years of introspective therapy sessions, revealing his actions, motivations, and self-perceptions. Tropper, the creator, intended for Coop to embody the show’s perspective, and the voiceovers served as the perfect tool to achieve this intimacy.

Tropper found it intriguing to incorporate a ’60s noir-style voiceover in a modern series. The appeal lies in the contrast – while what you see on screen is happening live, the voiceover comes from a more composed and detached perspective. This person offers insights that are calmer than the one experiencing the action at that moment.

Tropper notes that incorporating voiceovers helped him to establish the show’s tone to a significant degree. These voiceovers serve to highlight the juxtaposition between the character’s self-destructive, daring actions on screen and his later reflections, creating a sense of ironic commentary about life through the character, Coop.

Hamm perceives Coop as standing aside and viewing his life from a distance. “Perhaps he’s detaching from his former self, or the image he once held of himself, maybe it’s a step towards becoming a improved version. Perhaps that’s how we evolve. But at least he’s self-aware enough to recognize that he’s drifting.

Despite the fact that Cooper’s actions of stealing from the wealthy to enrich himself serve a practical financial purpose, could there be something more, such as an enjoyment of the thrill or the danger, underlying his actions?

Hamm expresses uncertainty about labeling it as such, but he suggests it’s less about danger and more about the absurdity of the excessive wealth accumulated within this community. He thinks this abundance provides a strange satisfaction for him, as he seems to find pleasure in alleviating some of that wealth from others.

Tropper chimes in: “The allure of the sensational plot point – a hedge fund manager burglarizing homes – can easily distract us. However, for me, this series is more deeply rooted in family dynamics. It’s about the disintegration of a family, and it portrays a man grappling with the unresolved grief over his family’s breakup.

Prior to losing his job, he had already lost his wife in his marriage – she was no longer with him,” Tropper explains. “He hasn’t yet realized that this happened because he neglected his responsibilities and focused on less important matters. To me, the greatest risk in amassing wealth is not its inherent evil; it lies in the excessive time and energy invested in its acquisition. This obsession can drain your focus from what truly matters – family, relationships, and things that will hold significant value for you in the long run.

However, it transpires that once you delve into the underworld of crime, it’s likely to retaliate against you.
