Actor Jon Bernthal has been confirmed for a major role in Sony’s upcoming production, “Spider-Man: Fresh Start,” where he will portray The Punisher.
Known for his intense portrayal of Frank Castle in both Disney+, Netflix’s Daredevil series and the Punisher spinoff, Jon Bernthal is all set to reprise this role in the upcoming Marvel-Sony production, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This movie will extend his presence within the Marvel cinematic universe and represents a significant change in tone for the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man films, potentially guiding them towards a darker direction.

Under the guidance of director Destin Daniel Cretton (known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), the upcoming film titled Brand New Day is set to commence filming in England this coming summer, with a scheduled release date on July 31, 2026. Although Marvel and Sony have managed to keep the storyline details confidential, the involvement of the Punisher has sparked excitement among fans, fueling speculation about the movie’s plot.
From Street-Level Vengeance to Global Stakes
Jon Bernthal’s portrayal of Frank Castle as a Marvel antihero is often hailed as one of the truest and most passionate yet. With his fighting style grounded in raw power, determination, and an array of firearms, Castle’s street-level vigilantism presents a stark contrast to Spider-Man (Peter Parker), who relies more on technology and agility. This difference could pave the way for either a formidable partnership or a fierce confrontation.
It’s noteworthy that this scenario echoes a kind of return for the character, considering his debut in the comics took place in Amazing Spider-Man Issue 129.

Initially, Bernthal assumed the role during Season 2 of Daredevil, following which he spearheaded two consecutive series, both garnering acclaim for their gritty style and explicit action sequences. His reappearance in Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+ has been noted, and his upcoming role in Brand New Day hints at Marvel’s ongoing faith in both the actor and character.
Jon Bernthal is set to lead his own Punisher series for Disney+, which he’s helping write as well. Moreover, there are expectations that he will feature in Season 2 of Born Again. It appears that one requirement for Bernthal reprising the role was maintaining the grittier, violent aspect of The Punisher – a creative choice that could be challenged within the relatively lighter rating of the Spider-Man universe.
Cast and Story Clues
Alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will once again appear in the film, taking on the characters MJ and Ned respectively. The specific extent of their roles within the storyline remains undisclosed at this time. Furthermore, Sadie Sink, recognized for her work on Stranger Things, has been added to the cast, lending an additional air of excitement and suspense to the already captivating group.

After the events in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker’s identity was erased from global memory, the film is set to unfold with many details still under wraps. There are whispers suggesting a motley crew of villains might make an appearance – from criminal masterminds to various versions of The Hulk (implying Mark Ruffalo will be part of it). However, Marvel Studios has yet to officially confirm any of these rumors.
A Long Time Coming for Bernthal and Holland
It’s quite fitting that Bernthal and Holland are teaming up again in “Brand New Day,” as they previously acted together in the medieval thriller “Pilgrimage” before both landing their respective roles in Marvel.

Initially, it’s said that they aided one another with their cassettes. Fast-forward eight years, their personas will soon appear together on screen.
A Grittier Spider-Man on the Horizon?
In the world of Brand New Day, I find myself questioning whether Castle stands as an ally, a rival, or even an unpredictable factor. Regardless of his role, his presence undeniably signifies a change in tone from the earlier series installments, which were characterized by their lighter atmosphere. This shift is significant, representing a risky move on Marvel and Sony’s part—a move that could inject fresh energy into the franchise after the multiverse-shattering events of No Way Home.

As fans eagerly anticipate the debut of a new trailer or plot summary, there’s no doubt about it – The Punisher is making a comeback! This time, he’ll be dispensing his unique form of justice within the realm of Spider-Man’s universe.
