‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Debuts Behind ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ Re-Release in China

As a longtime fan of both comic book adaptations and the magical world of Harry Potter, I must say that the recent box office performance of “Joker: Folie à Deux” and the re-release of the Harry Potter films in China is nothing short of intriguing. It’s fascinating to see how these two franchises, each with their unique appeal, are navigating the global cinema landscape.

The movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” was released in its last significant market, China, during the weekend. In the Chinese box office, this quirky comic book follow-up ranked below “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

In its re-release, the second “Harry Potter” film made $4.6 million during the weekend. Meanwhile, “Joker 2” collected $5.9 million from 11,204 screens over a five-day period. The initial release of “Joker” in 2019 garnered an astounding $743 million internationally, but it didn’t screen in China. Warner Bros., the distributor for both “Joker” and the “Harry Potter” series, ranked them on box office charts, but refused to disclose the direct comparison of “Joker 2’s” three-day earnings against its predecessor.

Worldwide, the movie “Folie à Deux” earned an additional $14.7 million from 78 different countries during the weekend, raising its global earnings to $135.5 million. In North America alone, it made $56.4 million, bringing its total earnings to $192 million. However, with a production cost of $200 million, the film is expected to lose between $150 million and $200 million during its cinema release.

The eight enchanting films featuring everyone’s beloved boy wizard, Harry Potter, are coming back to Chinese cinemas. The journey begins with “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” on October 11. The first Potter movie earned a strong second place at China’s box office with $6.6 million, trailing behind the local-language war drama “The Volunteers: The Battle of Life and Death.” To date, it has amassed $10 million. The remaining seven movies will follow on a weekly basis through November. As the Potter films were produced between 2001 and 2011, when China’s film industry was still growing but not yet at its current scale, this is the first time the franchise will be shown on such a grand scale in the country.

In other international markets, “The Wild Robot,” distributed by Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation, continued to lead among Hollywood releases, earning $23.1 million from 76 countries during the weekend. So far, this critically-acclaimed family movie has garnered a total of $94.3 million overseas and $196 million worldwide. Over the weekend, it expanded its reach into 21 new territories, such as the United Kingdom and Ireland ($4.2 million), Belgium ($700,000) and Ukraine ($500,000).
