‘Joker 2’ Tops International Box Office With $81.1 Million

As a seasoned moviegoer with over three decades of cinema-going under my belt, I must admit that I find myself both intrigued and perplexed by the performance of “Joker: Folie à Deux” at the box office. The initial “Joker” was an undeniable triumph, a masterpiece that left a lasting impression on me and many others. However, its follow-up seems to have stumbled out of the gate, both critically and financially.

This weekend, “Joker: Folie à Deux” led the global box office with an estimated earnings of $81.1 million internationally. However, its domestic performance was less than expected, bringing in only $40 million, following its 2019 predecessor “Joker.” In total, the unconventional comic book film has grossed $121.1 million worldwide.

Warner Bros., the studio behind the movie, faces a predicament due to the high production cost of “Joker: Folie à Deux”. In contrast, the initial “Joker” was made for just $65 million. Unfortunately, the film’s reviews have been unfavorable and audiences seem to share this sentiment, assigning it a disappointing CinemaScore of “D”. A significant portion of the increased costs is attributed to the fees for director Todd Phillips, as well as the salaries for Joaquin Phoenix, reprising his role as the troubled Arthur Fleck, and Lady Gaga, who brings her unique interpretation of Harley Quinn to life, a beloved character from the comics.

I was truly amazed to learn that the movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” graced an impressive 25,788 screens worldwide and was showcased in no less than 76 international markets. Notably, it managed to rake in $8 million in the U.K., $6.9 million in Germany, $5.6 million in Italy, $5.5 million in Mexico, and a cool $5 million in France. It’s set to open in Japan next week before making its grand entrance in China on October 16. As a fan, I can hardly wait to see this global phenomenon unfold!

The initial “Joker” film was an enormous success financially, raking in $335 million within the U.S. and an additional $743 million globally. At one point, it held the title for the highest-grossing R-rated movie; however, this record was broken by “Deadpool & Wolverine” which grossed a staggering $1.32 billion worldwide. Before the release of “Joker 2,” which sparked controversy among critics and viewers, director Phillips expressed that he had completed his work within the comic book movie genre. In an interview with EbMaster in August, he stated, “It was enjoyable to dabble in this type of playground for two movies, but I believe we’ve conveyed what we intended to express in this world.
