Johnny Depp’s Pirates Of The Caribbean Future Is Unclear, But Another Actor Wants To Return. I’d Love To See It

The future of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies is currently uncertain. Disney is developing a new film, but its direction is unclear. It’s unknown whether Johnny Depp will reprise his role, and surprisingly, Margot Robbie is now reportedly involved, despite earlier reports to the contrary. As of now, the cast is a mystery, though one former actor has expressed interest in returning.

After the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies were a hit, Captain Jack Sparrow teamed up with a new cast of characters in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The film featured new faces like Ian McShane as Blackbeard and a young Sam Claflin playing Philip, a missionary held captive by Blackbeard who develops a romantic interest in a mermaid. Claflin recently told comicbook.com that he’d do anything to return to the Pirates films. He explained…

Let’s beg the producers, because I would love to revisit that world again.

I’d be happy to see Sam Claflin try to convince Jerry Bruckheimer to bring back characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean films, like Philip and Syrena. I think it would be great to finally wrap up their storyline.

On Stranger Tides feels different from the other Pirates movies because it tells a largely self-contained story. It follows Captain Jack Sparrow’s quest for the Fountain of Youth, and concludes with a bizarre scene of Philip apparently turning into a merman, while Penelope Cruz’s character is left stranded on an island with a voodoo doll of Jack Sparrow.

Those story ideas weren’t used in the movie Dead Men Tell No Tales and have been left unresolved ever since. If the next Pirates of the Caribbean film doesn’t start the story over completely, it would be fantastic if it could revisit and build upon those abandoned plot threads.

Although I’d love to see Sam Claflin reprise his role for story reasons, he’s personally interested in returning because he didn’t fully enjoy making the original film. He says that, as it was his first movie, On Stranger Tides felt overwhelming, and he now wishes he’d had a better experience. He went on to explain…

I’ll never forget my first film – even though I’d done a little TV work, being on a film set was terrifying! I felt completely lost, like a deer caught in headlights. It was so daunting stepping into that world when I had no idea what to expect. I really threw myself into the role, taking it incredibly seriously, and honestly, I think it deserved that dedication. That’s just the kind of character Philip is – one you want to give your all to.

There are currently two possible storylines for the next Pirates of the Caribbean film. One version would bring Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow – a return that producer Jerry Bruckheimer supports – while the other doesn’t include him. It’s doubtful Sam Claflin will reprise his role as Philip in either version, but I personally wouldn’t mind seeing it happen.
