Johnny Depp Says His Life Turned ‘Into a Soap Opera’ as He Debuts First Directorial Effort in 27 Years: It Was ‘Televised, in Fact’

As a long-time cinema enthusiast and someone who has witnessed the ebb and flow of Hollywood’s tides, it is truly heartening to see Johnny Depp back in the director’s chair with his latest film, “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness.” This film seems like a testament to resilience, not just for its protagonist Modigliani, but also for Depp himself, who has faced his fair share of challenges in both real life and reel life.

Speaking to the global press during a San Sebastian press conference for his latest directorial outing, “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness,” Johnny Depp reflected on the nearly three decades since his last feature outing, 1997’s much-maligned “The Brave.”

In the throes of 1916, I, Amedeo Modigliani – affectionately known as ‘Modi’ – find myself ensnared in a whirlwind of chaos that sweeps through war-torn Paris and its pulsating art scene. Having eluded the law after a heated altercation in a swanky eatery, I ponder the prospect of my career and life in the Luminous City reaching an untimely end. Guided by the counsel of my confidant and dealer, Leopold Zborowski, I take a perilous gamble, seeking an audience with American collector Maurice Gangnat. The power to elevate me from penniless artist to worldwide phenomenon lies in his hands, should he choose to speak.

When asked about similarities between him and the main character from his movie, Johnny Depp stated that they both needed to prove themselves, much like any other person would.

He put it simply: I’ve encountered various situations in different places, but I’m doing fine, and so have most of us. We’ve all faced challenges, even if yours didn’t become a public spectacle like a TV show, we all deal with our own battles. The struggles you’ve endured and can reflect upon are your unique experiences, or as I see it, your badges of honor. You won’t forget them.

During most of the conversation, Depp appeared thoughtful. He expressed that his recent directing ventures have been “exponentially more favorable” compared to what he endured while directing “The Brave,” a film in which he also starred. Unfortunately, this production was panned by both critics and audiences when it was first released over two decades ago.

On this occasion, Depp explains that the process enabled him to truly grasp and enjoy the sensation of being like a big child, which is his nature. He further adds that when creating a movie, it should be enjoyable at the minimum.

For several decades, the project known as “Modi” has been in existence, with Academy Award-winning actor Al Pacino playing a significant role. He personally selected Johnny Depp to take on the directorial responsibilities. The production is handled by Barry Navidi and Johnny Depp’s U.K.-based production company, IN.2.

The restrictions on the movie review for “Modi” were removed prior to today’s press event, and the initial responses that have been made public thus far have generally been favorable, conveying astonishment at the enjoyment the writers derived from watching the film. At this point, it seems the outlook is significantly more optimistic compared to Johnny Depp’s 1997 directorial debut “The Brave.

One of Johnny Depp’s initial ventures post his 2022 legal dispute with ex-spouse Amber Heard, who accused him of domestic violence, is the project titled “Modi”. Despite winning the defamation case, the fallout from the controversy has left marks on his career. Last year at Cannes, he made a return to film festivals with a leading role in Maïwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry”, but Hollywood hasn’t fully embraced him back yet.

In an interview with EbMaster, producer Navidi of the film “Modi” expressed optimism about Johnny Depp’s return to industry favor, stating that the movie could aid in this process and potentially open up new opportunities. Navidi believes that while Depp may be well-liked in Hollywood, his global appeal is truly immense.

Johnny Depp has had a robust connection with San Sebastian for several years now. In 2020, he received a jury award as a producer for “Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan”. The following year, in 2021, he debuted IN.2 here and was bestowed the Donostia career achievement award. This year, his film “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness” will have its world premiere on Tuesday evening, and will be screened twice more during this year’s festival.
