Donnie Yen is both directing and acting in a new action movie connected to the ‘John Wick’ universe, focusing on the character Caine. He believes the film will be innovative and redefine the action genre.
The John Wick movies have been a huge success, consistently earning more and more at the box office. The first film made $86 million, followed by $174 million for the second, $328 million for the third, and an impressive $447 million for the fourth.
Although the recent film Ballerina, featuring Ana de Armas, earned $137 million—a lower amount for the series—Lionsgate is still enthusiastic about continuing the franchise.
The studio is developing a new spinoff series focusing on Caine, the blind assassin character who first appeared in Chapter 4.
Caine movie will “honor what audiences love about John Wick”

Donnie Yen stars as Caine in a new film he’s also directing. The screenplay is by Matson Tomlin, who co-wrote ‘The Batman – Part II’, and filming will begin in April.
Yen explained to Deadline that he was attracted to the character of Caine because of his internal conflicts. Caine is a hero who values love, duty, and selflessness, even in a harsh and unforgiving world, which makes him unique.
I’m really excited about this movie, honestly. I think it has the potential to really change things up in the action genre. My aim is to make the ultimate martial arts action film – something that gives fans what they love about John Wick, but also adds a whole new level of emotion and a fresh visual style. I want it to be definitive, you know?
I’m thrilled to both direct and star in this project. I want to use everything I’ve learned from my years making action movies to create something fresh and innovative.

Details about the story are currently scarce, but Rina Sawayama will reprise her role as Akira. Adam Fogelsen, chairman of Lionsgate, shared these comments about the film:
After the success of John Wick: Chapter 4, it was obvious that audiences were especially captivated by the character of Caine, making his story a logical continuation for the series.
We’re thrilled to be working with Donnie on this new project. He has a unique vision and the skills to expand the world of John Wick in a way that feels true to his filmmaking style.
