Amazon’s MGM Studios has chosen writer Derek Kolstad to contribute to creating a possible new series for their studio. He will be adapting the upcoming romantic fantasy book “Shield of Sparrows” into a full-length film.
As reported by “Shield of Sparrows,” penned by Devney Perry, a top-selling author and media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, the book will be released for publication by Entangled Publishing’s Red Tower imprint on May 6th. This novel is characterized as a “romantasy” with a slow-building romance, high stakes, and intrigue, featuring enemies turning into lovers, ominous creatures stalking a haunted land, and an unassuming princess discovering her inner warrior. Premeditated Productions is currently in the works of creating a film adaptation under their first-look agreement with Amazon MGM Studios.
Derek Kolstad Is Behind Two Major Action Franchises
Initially, Kolstad made his mark in Hollywood by writing the scripts for the films starring Dolph Lundgren, namely “One in the Chamber” from 2012 and “The Package” in 2013. Later on, he sold a screenplay called “Scorn” to Thunder Road Pictures, which eventually became the highly successful action movie starring Keanu Reeves, “John Wick“, released in 2014. Kolstad then went on to write the scripts for the first two sequels: “John Wick: Chapter 2” from 2017 and “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” in 2019, both of which were critically acclaimed and commercial triumphs.
Since its release, John Wick has grown into one of Lionsgate’s most successful franchises. It encompasses four primary films, a female-led spinoff, and a prequel miniseries. Additionally, an anime-styled prequel movie, another spinoff film, and a new television show following the events after John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) are all in development.
David Leitch was also involved in writing and producing the movie “Nobody,” having previously co-directed “John Wick.” Although not quite matching the success of “John Wick” at the box office, “Nobody” still performed well and received positive reviews, which has led to a sequel being planned for release this August. The script for the sequel is again by Kolstad. Additionally, Kolstad contributed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe limited series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” as well as the action comedy series “Die Hart,” starring Kevin Hart.
In terms of Amazon, the novel “Shield of Sparrows” represents their most recent purchase within the fantasy genre. Additionally, Amazon is developing a series based on Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean series, starting with “Fourth Wing”. Notably, Amazon is also known for hosting various productions. At the movies, Amazon MGM Studios is currently producing a reboot of “Masters of the Universe” and is said to be quite near to finalizing a deal that includes Henry Cavill as the lead actor.
The novel “Shield of Sparrows,” following Perry’s first adaptation, is next to be brought to life for television. At present, CBS Studios are working on a TV series adaptation of the author’s six-volume romance series, “The Edens,” which takes place in her native state of Montana.
Shield of Sparrows is set to hit bookstore shelves on May 6.
