John Wick 5 depends on one thing, according to star Ian McShane

Recently, we managed to have a chat with renowned actor Ian McShane before the premiere of ‘Ballerina’. During our conversation, he shared some interesting insights about ‘John Wick 5‘, revealing a crucial aspect that this upcoming action installment hinges upon.

In the timeframe between John Wick 3 and 4, we are introduced to Eve Macarro, portrayed by Anna de Armas, a character who combines the skills of a ballet dancer with those of an assassin within the Ruska Roma family. Driven by her father’s untimely demise, she embarks on a quest for vengeance.

Indeed, Keanu Reeves returns to portray the character of Baba Yaga, albeit not as the central figure in this narrative. Additionally, Lance Reddick’s character, Charon, makes a poignant appearance in scenes that were filmed prior to his passing in 2023.

Absolutely, it’s hard to imagine Charon without Winston, and the same goes in reverse. With John Wick 5 officially happening, I couldn’t help but wonder what McShane had to say about it as we approach the release of Ballerina.

Ian McShane talks John Wick 5

McShane was cautious when discussing the forthcoming film, given that it’s currently in its initial stages of production. Nevertheless, he did reveal a crucial detail: the project hinges on Keanu Reeves. After all, he is none other than the one and only Boogeyman.

He smiled as he put it, “I’m afraid I’m not familiar with the subject.” But he went on to explain, “All I know is that they announced something, and if Keanu Reeves is healthy and interested, I have no doubt they’ll agree on a deal.

In John Wick 4, The Winston star made clear, “It’s not like anyone truly believes he’s dead.” This was before the announcement of the fifth installment, and since we never witnessed Wick’s demise on screen in the action movie realm, it suggests that his character is still very much alive.

As a game enthusiast, I delved deeper into the lore that McShane and Reddick crafted for Winston and Charon. Their backstory might just find its way onto the big screen in the upcoming movie!

Typically, he’d be accompanied by Reddick, a situation I found pleasant since we concocted a shared past where our paths crossed in Africa during the ’70s. At that time, I was employed with MI6 and he was involved in local administration. This is what he explained to us.

They maintained contact throughout their lives… and as they grew too aged, they were asked to leave, at which point they secretly joined forces and forged a bond. It’s unclear who supported them in this endeavor. That’s the beauty of it; perhaps that element will be explored in John Wick 5 – you just never know.

As for Ballerina, McShane is excited to see a female-fronted story told in the John Wick Universe.

It’s refreshing to see a woman in the movie who truly belongs, as it’s not just a fleeting choice… She made her debut with Anjelica Huston’s director at the ballet school. This detail is provided because the story unfolds between John Wick 3 and 4.

Throughout the film, Winston saves her, enrolls her in a ballet school, and then fast-forward 20 years. During this time, she becomes determined for revenge, seeking answers about her father, family, and mother.

When inquired about whether Winston perceives Eve similarly to how he sees John, McShane affirmed, “Indeed. They both belong to the same Ruska Roma family, they’ve been brought up this way, and he wishes to assist them in any manner possible, without overstepping the rules set by the High Table.

starting June 6, 2025, catch the ballerina at your local cinema! In the meantime, delve into all the details we’ve gathered about John Wick 5, the John Wick animated series, and the spin-off series titled “Under the High Table”.
