John Turturro Reveals Why Carmine Falcone Was Recast In The Penguin

As a dedicated fan of John Turturro’s exceptional acting career, I find his decision to step away from reprising his role as Carmine Falcone in HBO’s The Penguin commendable. His commitment to avoiding portrayals that objectify or harm women reflects his maturity and integrity as an artist. It’s refreshing to see a seasoned actor stand up for what he believes in, even if it means passing on a coveted role.

Despite Colin Farrell’s commitment to replay his character, Oswald “Oz” Cobb, in HBO’s adaptation of The Penguin, the show was compelled to recast the role of the deceased crime boss Carmine Falcone, previously played by John Turturro in The Batman. Now, Turturro has hinted that he declined the offer to reprise his character due to concerns about portraying violence against women in The Penguin.

During an interview with Variety, Turturro expressed that he had full creative control over his character, stating, “I made decisions based on what I felt was right for the role.” He also mentioned his discomfort with the portrayal of violence against women in the show, clarifying, “That’s not a direction I choose to take.

In The Batman, there were instances of female characters being harmed, with Falcone, portrayed by Turturro, playing a part in the murder of Annika Kosolov (Hana Hrzic), who was a close friend to Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz). In some of their shared scenes, Falcone even went so far as to choke Selina.

When questioned about the portrayal of violence against women in the movie, Turturro stated, “Such incidents occur out of view. It’s more chilling that way.” However, Annika’s murder wasn’t shown on-screen, but Falcone clearly grabbed Selina by the throat, which everyone witnessed.

In the flashback scenes of “The Penguin,” Mark Strong took over the character of Falcone, as originally played by Vincent D’Onofrio. Previously, showrunner Lauren LeFranc mentioned to IGN that D’Onofrio wasn’t able to return due to a scheduling issue.

LeFranc stated that John was unable to meet with us due to scheduling issues. Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t find a suitable time for him. However, I must say, I’m overjoyed about the addition of Mark Strong to our team. I believe he’s quite talented.

According to Turturro’s observation, The Batman contains a significant amount of violence, some of which involves or targets women. Yet, this does not mean that the actions portrayed by the character in The Batman should be dismissed.

The Penguin airs Sunday nights on HBO and Max.
