As a seasoned film enthusiast who has had the privilege of attending numerous film festivals around the globe, I must say that my recent encounter with John Turturro at the Sarajevo Film Festival was nothing short of captivating. This multi-talented artist, whose career spans over four decades and encompasses acting, writing, and directing, left me in awe of his versatility and passion for cinema.
As a film enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I find it truly inspiring to witness the recognition bestowed upon John Turturro at this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival. His career achievements are nothing short of remarkable, and it was a privilege to see him receive the Heart of Sarajevo Award.
Turturro, on his inaugural trip to Sarajevo, detailed his exploration of diverse religious landmarks such as several mosques, the Jewish Museum, Grand Synagogue, and a Jewish cemetery, in addition to other notable historic spots.
Actor John Turturro, known for his roles in two of this season’s most buzzworthy movies at the fall film festival, talked about portraying Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton’s ex-boyfriend in Pedro Almodóvar’s upcoming English movie, “The Room Next Door.” He plans to attend Toronto to promote that film as well as Sean Ellis’s “The Cut.”
Turturro pointed out the benefits of maintaining a long-term collaboration with a movie director, stating that it’s particularly advantageous as it fosters mutual trust between parties. Additionally, he commended the late Italian filmmaker Francesco Rosi, with whom he worked on “The Truce,” portraying Primo Levi.
As a filmmaker, Turturro shared how his past experiences as an actor working alongside other directors impacted his own directorial style. He delved into his direction of “Mac” and “Romance & Cigarettes,” and hinted at the factors that influence his choice of roles to take on.
Additionally, Turturro spoke about his experiences in “Transformers” and “The Batman,” as well as some of his extended TV roles. Regarding future projects, he mentioned, “I’ve got a few things I’ve been developing. It really hinges on finding the right team and securing enough financing to avoid having to hurry through it.”
