As a cinephile with a vast knowledge of Hollywood history and a penchant for behind-the-scenes tales, I find John Stamos’ recollection of his brief brush with Scientology to be both amusing and intriguing. The image of the ever-charming Stamos, still a teenager, causing a ruckus in a Scientology center with his Rocky and Bullwinkle impression is a delightful twist in the annals of Hollywood lore. It’s a testament to his youthful spirit and knack for mischief that even the stern-faced Scientologists couldn’t resist kicking him out!
In a fresh podcast, John Stamos shared an interesting tidbit: he almost became a member of the Church of Scientology, yet his expulsion stemmed from excessive joking.
As I sat down for a chat with the talented impersonator Matt Friend on his podcast, “Friend in High Places,” I reminisced about my teenage years and the time I was unceremoniously booted from an organization following a solitary gathering.
“In an acting workshop, Stamos recalled encountering a captivating young woman. She suggested, ‘We’re all gathering at this location on Hollywood Boulevard later; join us when you can!’ At the time, he was employed at his father’s restaurant, but he felt compelled to leave. He explained to his dad, ‘I really need to go,’ so off he went. He was around 16 or 17 years old then.”
He visited the specified location, only to find it was a Scientology facility. Upon entering, they requested him for an E-meter test, a device that gauges the intensity of a minor electric current flowing through a person during auditing sessions. During this process, one is asked to hold two metal cans. Thus, with metal cans in his hands, the actor from “Full House” remembered how he felt compelled to play a prank on them.
He said, with an old-fashioned tone mimicking a cartoon, “Since you’re holding those two cans, I began speaking like this: ‘Hello… Peabody from the Time Machine!'” This phrase is reminiscent of the time-traveling duo, Sherman and Peabody, from the animated show “Rocky and Bullwinkle.”
Of course, the Scientologists were none too pleased with his tomfoolery.
He went on to say, “They weren’t pleased with it,”. “I was being overly playful, and they responded, ‘Leave. Leave now.’ Essentially, they showed me the door.”
Previously, in his 2023 memoir titled “If You Would Have Told Me,” Stamos had talked about an incident. In this memoir, he recounted a woman named Mia giving him a substantial book post-acting class. He remembered her saying, “I believe it will broaden your perspective on some extraordinary matters,” as she suggested they discuss the book the day after.
