John Romero, famous for creating games like Doom and Quake, revealed earlier this year that his new first-person shooter project had been canceled. While Romero Games didn’t directly say the cancellation was due to Microsoft’s recent layoffs, a former employee of Romero Games confirmed it was. Now, Romero indicates the game might not be entirely scrapped after all.
John Romero recently announced at the Madrid Video Game Salon (as reported by Eurogamer) that his project is moving forward again, and has been completely reworked.
We’re not building this game from scratch,” Romero explained. “We can reuse assets and ideas from previous projects and incorporate them into a new, independent game. We have a wealth of existing material to work with. While the overall design is completely fresh, the team is really enthusiastic about the direction we’re taking.
Romero explained that while this new game isn’t a direct sequel to his earlier work, it uses many of the same ideas. He also described it as a smaller-scale project. He was intentionally vague about the gameplay, saying it will be unlike anything players have experienced before, aiming for the same level of fresh innovation that Elden Ring brought to the gaming world.
Romero Games managed to avoid recent cuts, but not all of Microsoft’s game studios were so fortunate. Microsoft shut down The Initiative and canceled their project, Perfect Dark. They also canceled Everwild and a new online multiplayer game that was in development at ZeniMax Online Studios.
