John Oliver does not approve of a U.K. version of “Saturday Night Live.”
During an interview on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” on Monday, the British comedian expressed his view that the idea seems very unappealing. When probed further by former SNL cast member Meyers, Oliver explained, “We’ve already had sketch comedy, and I believe this particular group is so unique.
Later on, during their conversation, the host of “Last Week Tonight” openly expressed his feelings about SNL, humorously commenting: “It’s a club. I’m trying hard not to say it – it’s a club. And I can’t figure out how you can impose that club on the U.K.” In response, Meyers pondered what aspects of SNL could be considered club-like, and Oliver pointed to their longstanding custom of working all night every Tuesday to prepare for the show as evidence.
Oliver found it hard to believe,” he remarked, “as such an action seems more fitting for a cult leader rather than a normal person. By the way, we usually keep awake throughout the night on Tuesdays.
Oliver argued that top-notch comedy can indeed be created without sacrificing rest, stating that “SNL” seems to be the exception proving the rule. He added that it’s unnecessary for creativity to be tied to a specific day where one must forego sleep or risk displeasing an important figure.
Last month, the British version of “Saturday Night Live,” or UK SNL, was officially announced and is scheduled to premiere on Sky next year. Lorne Michaels, who conceived the sketch show and has been its guiding force since its inception in 1975, will assume an executive producer role.
