John Oliver Says Mark Zuckerberg ‘Looks Like Eddie Redmayne Was Cast to Play Ice Cube’ as He Slams Meta Removing Fact-Checking for ‘Free Expression’: ‘Self-Serving Bulls—’

In a recent installment of “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday, John Oliver didn’t hold back when criticizing Mark Zuckerberg. He joked about the Meta CEO’s latest appearance while also slamming him for discontinuing fact-checking on Facebook and Instagram following Donald Trump’s presidency.

During a discussion about how many prominent tech leaders supported Trump following his win against Kamala Harris, Oliver pointed out Mark Zuckerberg’s recent move to discontinue Facebook’s fact-checking initiatives, claiming they were excessively politically biased.

Zuckerberg expressed the need for a return to the core values of open communication on Facebook and Instagram in his recent video,” Zuckerberg stated, donning a longer hairstyle, a laid-back black tee, and a golden necklace in the said clip. (Informal)

In his latest video, Zuckerberg emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of free speech on Facebook and Instagram, while he appeared with longer hair, wearing a relaxed black T-shirt and sporting a gold chain. (Formal)

Ah, is that the topic you were referring to? To be honest, I’d prefer we discuss why you seem to resemble Eddie Redmayne portraying Ice Cube instead. It appears you’ve taken on the likeness of a white Macklemore. You look like a high school student trying to blend in as another student with fewer companions.” (Oliver said)

As a film critic, I found myself remarking, “That’s the Meta CEO casually dismissing fact-checkers while adorning a watch worth an eye-watering $900,000. It’s a paradoxical statement, really – a timepiece that expensive only speaks volumes if it flashes, ‘Perhaps it’s high time to give the rest of your wealth away, you’re clearly overindulged now.’ Such is life in the digital age.

Speaking about Facebook, John Oliver remarked, “Zuckerberg’s choice on fact-checking seems poised to significantly worsen the platform. And Zuckerberg’s attempt to label himself as Lil Broccoli, boasting about his company’s history with free expression, is nothing more than a self-justifying deception.

Oliver noted that Zuckerberg has been under significant pressure from the Biden administration to tackle misinformation, a topic he discussed at length during his interview on Joe Rogan’s podcast shortly after the fact-checking policy announcement. However, according to Oliver, it appears as though Trump is acting in much the same way as Zuckerberg accused the Biden administration of doing: Using the influence of his office to force social media companies to conform to his desires. And it seems that Zuckerberg is yielding to this pressure.

In wrapping up his show, the host stated: “He’ll argue these changes aren’t due to political pressure, but it seems clear that Facebook is heading towards being an abyss of hate and misinformation – though one might think that’s just its usual state, we’re about to witness what happens when they completely give up trying.
