John Oliver Fights Back Tears Urging Viewers to Vote for Kamala Harris: ‘Wouldn’t It Be Great to Live in a World’ Where Trump Is ‘No Longer an Active Threat?’

As an immigrant who chose to call America my home and became a citizen in 2019, I can wholeheartedly agree with John Oliver’s emotional plea during the final “Last Week Tonight” episode before the U.S. election. This year marks my second time voting in a U.S. presidential election, and it feels more crucial than ever.

During the last “Last Week Tonight” show before the American election, John Oliver became quite passionate, encouraging his audience members to support Kamala Harris in their votes.

Despite spending most of his time during this election cycle discussing why not to vote for Donald Trump, Oliver has made it clear that he will be casting his ballot for Kamala Harris on Tuesday. Although Harris’ policies may not be flawless, Oliver is still choosing her as his candidate. This year marks the second time Oliver, who became an American citizen in 2019, will be voting in a U.S. presidential election.

Elections may not be sufficient by themselves to bring about large-scale change, but they are indispensable for any such transformation to take place,” Oliver explained. “That’s because on election day, you essentially get to pick the person you’d rather see advocating for the following four years and determining where that effort will be directed.

With a lump in his throat, Oliver stated emphatically: “Indeed, I hold this land dear. I’m an immigrant who willingly made it my home. To quote the late, revered Lee Greenwood, ‘I’m proud to be an American.’ In fact, I believe there is nothing more characteristic of our nation than maintaining a vigorous, challenging relationship with those in authority, regardless of whether or not you supported them.

Oliver observed that “this speech didn’t exactly lift our spirits,” but to wrap things up optimistically, he suggested that if Trump doesn’t secure victory in this election, it’s probably unlikely he’ll try for another term.

As a film critic, I can’t help but reflect on the political spectacle that once was, and perhaps, might be no more. The charismatic yet divisive figure, despite his flair for drama and ability to ignite passions, has faced two consecutive defeats at the polls. At 82 years old, one can’t help but wonder if his time on center stage is nearing an end.

Oliver firmly believed he yearned deeply for life in that realm, and he earnestly hoped that everyone would exert every effort they could over the next two days to bring about such a world.
