Spoilers for Episode 3 of Poker Face Season 2 are ahead! Catch up with a Peacock subscription.
In the TV series “Poker Face,” Natasha Lyonne’s character Charlie Cale wanders across the U.S., stumbling upon murder after murder. Along the way, she encounters a diverse and captivating array of characters, brought to life by exceptional actors such as Cynthia Erivo portraying five sisters and Giancarlo Esposito as a funeral home owner. However, one standout performance that might surprise you isn’t from someone typically known for acting; it comes from comedian John Mulaney.
Indeed, in the first three episodes of the current season of “Poker Face,” airing now on the 2025 TV schedule, John Mulaney’s performance was truly exceptional. It got me thinking that he ought to take on more acting roles.
John Mulaney Showed Off A Whole New Side Of Himself In Poker Face
To begin with, all the aspects I adore in John Mulaney’s comedy are showcased brilliantly in his episode of Poker Face. His delivery is spot-on, and certain lines from “Whack-a-Mole” left me laughing so hard I nearly fell over. The lip-reading scenes, as well as the scene where he negotiates with Charlie after losing, were particularly funny. To sum it up, Mulaney effectively utilized many of his comedic talents in portraying FBI agent Daniel Clyde-Otis.
Daniel Clyde-Otis, as Charlie described him, is a multifaceted character who functions as a double agent. His role involves serving two masters, keeping his work for Rhea Perlman’s crime boss Beatrix Hasp hidden from his coworkers and friends like Simon Helberg’s Luca Clark. Watching Mulaney skillfully portray this complex character was captivating and filled with depth.
Daniel was an intriguing figure, exhibiting a peculiar blend of compassion towards individuals like Luca and yet displaying coldness and brutality at other times. It’s not an easy role to pull off convincingly. Mulaney managed to achieve this balance remarkably well, infusing the character with his distinctive wit while creating a multi-layered and complex figure who turned out to be the main antagonist in the episode.

Now, I Need John Mulaney To Act More
It’s clear that John Mulaney has quite a bit of experience under his belt before this point. He had a striking appearance on The Bear, and he’s graced the screens as a five-timer on Saturday Night Live. Moreover, his repertoire extends to voice acting, with roles in Big Mouth, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Despite this impressive resume, many of us, including myself, primarily associate Mulaney with stand-up comedy. Therefore, his acting gigs often come across as enjoyable cameos or brief interludes in our minds.
However, Poker Face showed me that this man should act way more than he currently does.

Critics praise Natasha Lyonne for adding even more ‘unconventional’ humor to the second season of Poker Face, and this isn’t just hype.
Despite the joy I get from consistently watching “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney” on Netflix, I am eagerly anticipating seeing him take on new roles in other productions more frequently.
In this Peacock mystery series, he got to perform in an entirely fresh setting, which I found thoroughly enjoyable. Earlier, I noted his exceptional timing and wit, but this time around, he added a touch of drama and depth that made the character Daniel Clyde-Otis captivating to observe.
Rian Johnson, or any director who might be listening, consider casting Mulaney in future installments of the Knives Out Mystery series, if there are any. In fact, I encourage directors to give this gifted comedian more roles that let him demonstrate his versatility as an actor. He truly shone (intentionally punny) in Poker Face, and I’d love for him to grace our screens with new characters just as frequently as he does as himself – the exceptionally talented comic.
