John Malkovich admitted that he wasn’t familiar with The Fantastic Four prior to agreeing to play a part in the forthcoming revival of the Marvel series.
The actor shared with me at the LA premiere of “Opus,” “I’m quite certain I saw it as a child, given my love for comics back then. However, it’s been such a long while ago.” He added, “To be honest, I only remembered that there had been previous films based on it.
John Malkovich’s character in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” movie is being kept secret, but Marvel enthusiasts are guessing he might be portraying Ivan Kragoff, a villain known as the Red Ghost from the comics. The Red Ghost is a Soviet scientist who duplicates the team’s space mishap and acquires the ability to become intangible. He also manufactures a squad of Super Apes, who possess powers similar to those of the Fantastic Four.
In the recently unveiled trailer for the upcoming movie, there was a fleeting appearance by John Malkovich, who sports a beard now. About his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, he shared, “It was enjoyable. I appreciated the cast. It was entertaining. It was intriguing” to film it.
The movie marks a reunion with his “Cut Bank” director Matt Shakman.
Indeed, it’s an unusual situation since all you see are massive screens and eighteen colossal cranes,” Malkovich stated. “It’s quite peculiar, yet enjoyable. The crew was delightful. Time will tell how it unfolds.
This ensemble features Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, along with Ralph Ineson, Julia Garner, Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, and Sarah Niles.
John Malkovich hasn’t yet figured out if he’ll appear in more Marvel films. He simply stated, “We’ll find out. To be honest, I don’t know.” A few weeks ago, Matt (likely referring to director Matt Shakman) sent him a sweatshirt with a thoughtful message, but they haven’t had a recent conversation about the project. It seems he’s currently engrossed in editing.
John Malkovich recently shared in an interview with GQ that he turned down Marvel opportunities as the offers didn’t provide him with suitable compensation to spend half a year suspended in front of a green screen.
“The Fantastic Four: The First Steps” opens in theaters July 25 from Disney and Marvel Studios.
In the movie “Opus,” John Malkovich takes on the role of Alfred Moretti, a former popular musician who seeks to make a return to the spotlight after being out of it for three decades. The script and direction are by Mark Anthony Green, and alongside Malkovich, the cast features Ayo Edebiri, Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Tony Hale, Amber Midthunder, Stephanie Suganami, and Aspen Martinez.
John Malkovich shared that his singing and dancing sequences weren’t pre-planned with formal choreography. Instead, he explained, “We had an excellent movement coach who helped us develop recurring patterns but nothing choreographed. Singing the songs was a truly remarkable experience, something I wouldn’t have thought I’d ever do, and perhaps there’s a reason for that. My initial reaction might have been the best choice.
