John Lithgow discusses fan reactions to his inclusion in HBO’s “Harry Potter” show, taking into account the controversial figure of J.K. Rowling as its creator.
During an interview with The Times of London, Lithgow expressed that he encountered some criticism for participating in HBO’s “Harry Potter” series due to Rowling’s contentious remarks regarding the transgender community. Lithgow, who stars in “Conclave,” admitted that this backlash was something he never anticipated and primarily considered his age before agreeing to take on the role.
Indeed, the decision was significant as it might be my final main character portrayal,” Lithgow remarked. “This role requires an eight-year dedication, which had me contemplating the aspect of life’s passage and considering that this part could serve as a fitting conclusion to my career.
John Lithgow mentioned that following his decision to take on the role, a close friend and mother of a transgender child wrote him an open letter titled “A Letter to John Lithgow: I Urge You to Step Away from Harry Potter.
He stated that it served as a warning sign, similar to the canary in a coal mine,” Lithgow continued, considering why Rowling’s previous remarks might impact the current project.
Lithgow mused, ‘What’s the relevance here?’ He pondered how J.K. Rowling might have incorporated this. Eventually, he expects to meet her, and he’s eager to discuss it with her.
When asked if the backlash has made him reconsider the role, Lithgow said, “Oh, heavens no.”
In the year 2020, J.K. Rowling shared a string of posts on social media, suggesting that transgender individuals were invalidating or obliterating the genuine experiences of women. Subsequently, actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint released statements expressing their disagreement with her views.
Following the debut of “Harry Potter” on HBO, HBO’s head Casey Bloys clarified to the press that J.K. Rowling was deeply involved in choosing both the writer and director for the series, but her controversial views on transgender individuals have not impacted the casting or employment of writers and production staff for the show.
