John Lithgow Says Dumbledore in HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series Is the ‘Last Big Role I’ll Probably Play,’ Teases Trinity Killer’s Return in New ‘Dexter’ Series

John Lithgow is set to take on two renowned characters – one old, one fresh. The esteemed actor sat down with EbMaster for an episode of “Know Their Lines” and disclosed that he will portray Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series, and furthermore, he’ll reprise his role as the Trinity Killer in “Dexter.” Regarding the former character, Lithgow mentioned he has a lot of ground to cover.

He admitted that unlike most people, he’s not fully versed in Harry Potter lore. Making this choice was a significant step, as it impacts the upcoming years of his life. And remember, he’s not a spring chicken anymore; this might be one of the last major roles he takes on.”

Or:

“He confessed that while many people seem to have Harry Potter stories memorized, he doesn’t. This decision was a big deal because it affects several years in his future. Plus, let’s face it, this could be one of the last significant roles he’ll take on, as he’s not exactly a young actor anymore.

He didn’t jump into the idea of confronting Dumbledore without giving it much thought. “My main concern was, ‘What makes this different? Why add to the established lore when it’s already been executed so skillfully?'” he confided. “They simply made it seem fresh and exciting.

The upcoming TV show, set to be broadcast on HBO and streamed on Max, plans to devote an entire season to each book, offering a more detailed examination of the story compared to the movies. Already, Lithgow has begun delving into J.K. Rowling’s books in preparation.

As the children in the stories matured, you uncover layer upon layer of Dumbledore’s complex personality,” he explained. “I was told about this and have since delved into these revelations myself to develop a unique understanding.

Additionally, Lithgow expressed a personal bond with his predecessor, Michael Gambon. He confessed, “I was an ardent fan of Michael Gambon. I never had the opportunity to meet him, but I always admired him from afar. Interestingly enough, Michael Gambon and I share the same birthday, which I found quite magical and fitting for someone as enchanting as he was.

Interestingly enough, Lithgow shared insights on his surprising comeback to “Dexter,” even though his character, the Trinity Killer, was believed to have perished in Season 4.

Lithgow revealed that he recently returned for a day’s work. They are rebooting the entire Michael C. Hall version of ‘Dexter.’ It appears Hall’s character didn’t actually die; instead, Lithgow returns as a ghostly figure, with his character gradually regaining consciousness on a hospital bed.
