As an actor nears the end of their career, they face a significant choice: whether to grow a long, white beard for a role or not. It’s not about playing Santa Claus; it’s about stepping into the shoes of Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series on Max. John Lithgow, confirmed by Screen Rant, will be portraying this iconic character. Given his extensive experience transforming himself into roles like Lord Farquaad, Dick Solomon, Winston Churchill, and J.J. Hunsecker over the years, taking on Dumbledore should not be a daunting task for Lithgow. However, he acknowledges that this role will mark the closing chapter of his career. “The offer came as a complete surprise to me,” Lithgow shared. “It was a tough decision because it will shape the final phase of my life. But I’m extremely excited about it.” Pondering one’s mortality while making an important choice? That’s quite Dumbledore-ish.
In the upcoming series, John Lithgow is set to collaborate with showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod. As of now, no other cast members have been disclosed. However, Warner Bros. previously publicized an open audition for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, which were announced in September 2024 – these characters represent young wizards who stand a chance to be mentored by Lithgow.
