John Dutton’s Yellowstone Story Still Could Have Continued After Kevin Costner Quit

Despite Kevin Costner’s departure, the second half of Yellowstone season 5 still offered the possibility of continuing John Dutton III’s story. Costner left one of television’s most popular shows during the production of season 5, which was released in two parts. The Oscar-winning actor decided to leave Yellowstone because of scheduling conflicts and his commitment to directing his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga.

Okay, so when Kevin Costner decided to leave Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan made a pretty bold move – he just killed off John Dutton. The second half of season 5 really shifted to Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Beth (Kelly Reilly) trying to figure out what happened to their dad, and ultimately deciding what the future held for the Yellowstone Ranch. It was all about their investigation and the big choices they had to make.

Kevin Costner did appear in the final episodes of Yellowstone, but a stand-in filled his role in scenes showing John Dutton before and after his supposed murder by Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri). Aside from family photos, Costner wasn’t seen on screen in the second part of season 5. However, the situation could have been handled differently.

John Dutton Could’ve Been In Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 Without Kevin Costner

Even after Kevin Costner’s departure, season 5, part 2 of Yellowstone could have featured John Dutton through flashbacks. Josh Lucas played the younger version of John Dutton throughout the show’s five seasons, appearing as a grieving and more intense John in the 1990s flashbacks, following the death of his wife, Evelyn (played by Gretchen Mol).

Josh Lucas played a younger version of John Dutton in nine episodes of Yellowstone. Similar to Kevin Costner, Lucas’s final appearance was in season 5, episode 8, titled “A Knife and No Coin.” His last scene showed a flashback of young Rip Wheeler (Kyle Red Silverstein) receiving the Yellowstone brand and pledging his loyalty to the Dutton Ranch.

Josh Lucas was one of the first actors cast in Yellowstone. In a 2022 interview with Deadline, he explained that Taylor Sheridan told him the younger version of John Dutton would feature prominently in season 5. Lucas appeared as John in five episodes of the first part of Yellowstone season 5.

If Kevin Costner had finished filming Yellowstone, Josh Lucas probably would have continued appearing as a younger version of John Dutton in flashback scenes. Since Taylor Sheridan had to change his plans for the show’s final episodes, it makes sense that he also decided to remove Lucas’s role when he cut out all of Costner’s scenes.

Josh Lucas’s character, John Dutton, unexpectedly left the show after the eighth episode of Yellowstone‘s fifth season. It feels like there were plans to explore John’s backstory in the 1990s that never came to fruition. While Taylor Sheridan could have used Lucas to play the younger version of John, he might have decided that doing so would have lessened the emotional impact of the Dutton family’s loss when the patriarch eventually died.

Yellowstone’s Final Episodes Were Less Satisfying Without John Dutton

The final episodes of Yellowstone season 5 struggled to regain momentum after Kevin Costner’s departure. While the show focused on Kayce, Beth, Rip, and the ranch hands grieving John Dutton, and also revealed Jamie Dutton’s involvement in the governor’s death, it couldn’t fully recover from the loss of its lead actor.

To cover for Kevin Costner’s (and John Lucas’) limited appearances, Taylor Sheridan employed several techniques in Yellowstone. He frequently shifted the story back and forth in time, showing events both before and after John Dutton’s death. Sheridan also gave himself a larger on-screen role as horse trainer Travis Wheatley. Both of these choices proved divisive among viewers.

Seeing Josh Lucas reprise his role as John Dutton in the early episodes of Yellowstone season 5 could have made his later death more impactful. At the very least, it would have provided a satisfying resolution to the conflict with wolves that troubled the Yellowstone ranch in the 1990s. It’s difficult to believe the show’s final episodes were improved by John Dutton’s absence.

With Kevin Costner taking a less central role in Yellowstone, the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, began building stories around Beth and Kayce, setting up their own spin-off series: Marshals on CBS and The Dutton Ranch on Paramount+. Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, and Cole Hauser all delivered strong performances, proving they could each lead their own Yellowstone show.

Seeing the Dutton Ranch’s story come to an end felt right, honestly. But I, like a lot of fans, can’t help but wonder what would have happened if Kevin Costner had stayed on the show. I’m really curious about what Taylor Sheridan had in mind for John Dutton and how things would have wrapped up if the original plan had played out.
