As a devoted cinephile, I’ve long admired Christopher Nolan’s cinematic masterpieces. From mind-bending thrillers like “Memento” and “Inception,” to science-fiction epics such as “Interstellar,” the man has consistently left audiences in awe. His work has also garnered multiple Oscars, with films like the iconic “Dark Knight” trilogy and the recent “Oppenheimer.” One of Nolan’s most intriguing films, “Tenet” (2020), starring John David Washington, is another gem in his illustrious filmography. Interestingly, after collaborating with Nolan, Washington has revealed an unanticipated rule that cast members must adhere to – a fascinating insight into the meticulous process behind Nolan’s cinematic magic!
What Rule Did John David Washington Say That Actors Who Work With Christopher Nolan Are Held To?
John David Washington has made significant strides since his time as a co-star on Dwayne Johnson’s HBO football series, “Ballers,” for five seasons. It wasn’t long after this show began that he started to secure leading roles in films such as Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” and Christopher Nolan’s intriguing film, “Tenet.
Not too long ago, the star praised Nolan for disrupting the industry by casting a Black actor as the lead in a large-scale sci-fi/action film. Now, in an interview with Esquire, the filmmaker has shared an unexpected rule regarding his actors – a rule I wouldn’t have guessed he would impose. When asked if he has ever retained any costumes from movies like Beckett, Amsterdam, and The Piano Lesson (which he made with his brother Malcolm), he responded in a cryptic manner:
Jeffrey Kurland outfitted me for the movie Tenet, and I ended up hanging on to a few of those sharp suits. It’s great that I can finally discuss this, as I’ve been guarding the secret for quite some time.
It’s no surprise that actors often keep souvenirs from film and TV sets, such as props or costumes, as reminders of their time working on these projects. For instance, Keanu Reeves has confessed to having items from the sets of films like The Matrix and John Wick, though it appears these were gifts. On the other hand, Tom Holland, a star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, openly admitted to stealing significant props from every set he’s worked on. Moreover, Hayley Atwell, who led Mission: Impossible – Fallout, was nicknamed “Klepto Atwell” due to her frequent thefts on set, which may have included taking a pair of Tom Cruise’s socks.
It seems strange that Washington kept secret for so long about taking home some of the stylish suits from the Nolan film, considering they allowed him to do so. However, when asked, he clarified the reason behind the secrecy.
You were advised to keep quiet about anything to anyone until Nolan finishes another two movies. This is just how Nolan operates, and I admire that approach, so I mostly wore it (the secret) at home, particularly during the pandemic.
Hey folks, this rule about Nolan and set items is puzzling me. I can’t help but speculate if it’s because he’s comfortable with prop and wardrobe staff distributing items to actors during production, but prefers not to be informed until he’s completely done with that particular film. Alternatively, he might prefer not to know about actors taking things from the set until there’s no chance he could be held accountable for it.
Either way, it seems like an unusual restriction regarding transparency about what was taken from the set. I mean, why not ask people to wait a year after filming before revealing what they got? Could it be that there’s some legal time limit he’s trying to help everyone (including himself) comply with?
It seems irrelevant now, but if we ever notice Washington wearing clothes that seem strikingly similar before, we’ll understand the reason behind it.
