John Cusack-Starring Chinese Thriller ‘Decoded’ Sets Global Release (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for global cinema, I must admit that my anticipation for “Decoded” is skyrocketing! The fusion of East and West, led by the talented John Cusack and directed by one of China’s most successful filmmakers, Chen Sicheng, promises an exhilarating cinematic experience.

The Chinese film studio responsible for the “The Meg” shark series, known as CMC Pictures, is preparing to launch the worldwide premiere of their cryptography-focused thriller titled “Decoded,” starring John Cusack.

The movie is set to premiere in Chinese cinemas this coming Saturday, with plans for a global launch by late August. CMC Pictures will act as the primary distributor in a select few regions, while also managing the distribution rights in various other areas.

The film has a strong pedigree and is on course to make a splash.

Under the guidance of acclaimed Chinese director, writer, and producer Chen Sicheng, this film boasts a screenplay co-written by Chen and Christopher MacBride, known for “Flashback” and “The Conspiracy.” The story is based on a novel penned by Mai Jia, a recipient of the prestigious Mao Dun Literature Prize.

In the tumultuous 1940s, “Decoded” tells the story of Rong Jinzhen, portrayed by Liu Haoran, a young man with autism who possesses an extraordinary gift for mathematics. His remarkable ability to solve intricate mathematical puzzles, demonstrated through a task given by his professor (Cusack), captures attention. However, this talent leads him to abandon his academic pursuits and instead, he is drafted as a codebreaker and spy.

The entire movie was filmed using IMAX-compatible cameras, resulting in dynamic, whirling visuals, and a storyline that jumps between 1944 and 1964, a style reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s work, as observed by Chinese preview audiences.

Even though the movie hasn’t been officially launched yet, it has already garnered a substantial sum of $8.03 million during its preview screenings. If it gets a nationwide release this weekend, there’s a chance it could dethrone the current box office king, “Successor,” from the number one spot on the daily earnings list.

In additional significant roles, the film “Decoded” features experienced Chinese actor Chen Daoming (known for “Coming Home” and “Aftershock”), Daniel Wu (recognized from “Into the Badlands” and “Westworld”), as well as Yu Feihong. Supporting this talented ensemble are actors Ren Luyao, Chen Yusi, Wang Yutian, Zhou You, and Zhu Zhu.

Production credits include CMC Pictures and Maoyan Weiying Media.

Known for blockbuster movies like the “Detective Chinatown” series and producer of the summer’s $490 million hit “Lost in the Stars,” Chen is said to consider “Decoded” as his creative zenith. However, he has also humbly acknowledged that he’s built upon the works of literary greats.

Chen expressed his fascination with understanding how an individual’s fate is influenced by the time period they inhabit. He stated that the work, ‘Decoded’, represents life as a distinct code, waiting to be cracked.

“With a modest financial allocation, we aimed to create a product that rivals Hollywood blockbusters in terms of visual and audio quality, as well as every other aspect. Our goal is to challenge the notion that only Hollywood can produce such large-scale films.” This is how Chen expressed it at a recent screening, according to Chinese state media.

John Cusack is now part of an expanding roster of prominent Hollywood male actors who have taken significant parts in significant Chinese productions. Names like Christian Bale from Zhang Yimou’s “The Flowers of War”, Matt Damon in Zhang’s “The Great Wall”, Adrien Brody and Tim Robbins in Feng Xiaogang’s “Back to 1942” are also on this list. Additionally, Cusack had previously acted in Mikael Hafstrom’s period piece set in China, “Shanghai”.
