John Boyega Has Called Dave Filoni and Hinted at Potential ‘Star Wars’ Return

Boyega famously played Finn – a former stormtrooper who became a hero for the Resistance – in the recent Star Wars sequel trilogy: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. While Finn quickly became a fan favorite, many viewers – including Boyega himself – were disappointed that the character wasn’t developed into the central Jedi hero that early marketing for The Force Awakens suggested.

During a recent appearance at MEGACON Orlando, John Boyega hinted at possible talks with Dave Filoni about returning as Finn in future Star Wars projects. A fan in the crowd urged Boyega to contact Filoni, and Boyega confirmed he already had. He didn’t share details about the conversation or if it involved a potential return to the franchise. Reports surfaced in November 2024 suggesting that both Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni were interested in bringing Boyega back to Star Wars.

John Boyega could potentially return in one of several future Star Wars projects. One possibility is Star Wars: Starfighter, featuring Ryan Gosling, which is scheduled for release in May 2027. This film takes place six or seven years after The Rise of Skywalker and will be the first Star Wars story set after the events of the sequel trilogy. However, because Starfighter is planned as a self-contained movie, and principal photography finished in December 2025, it’s probably not going to feature him.

John Boyega might return for the upcoming Star Wars film focusing on Rey as she establishes a new Jedi Order. Daisy Ridley will once again play Rey in the movie, which will take place fifteen years after The Rise of Skywalker. The film has had a rocky development process, with several different writing teams working on it. While there’s no confirmed release date yet, it’s expected to follow another planned Star Wars film, New Jedi: Order, with a potential release in 2028.

One of the most talked-about potential projects is The Hunt for Ben Solo, a film originally developed with actor Adam Driver and director Stephen Soderbergh (who has won an Academy Award). While Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni, both former Lucasfilm leaders, had given the project their approval, it was ultimately rejected by then-Disney CEO Bob Iger and Alan Bergman. Now that Dave Filoni co-leads Lucasfilm with Lynwen Brennan, and Josh D’Amario is the new CEO of Disney, many fans are hoping The Hunt for Ben Solo will be reconsidered. However, recent statements from Soderbergh suggest a revival is unlikely.

Boyega might reappear in future, unannounced Star Wars projects. Both Star Wars and Disney are entering a new phase with new leadership, and Boyega could be part of it. He might even lead and help create a spin-off series focused on his character, Finn, giving him more say in how the character is developed.
