John Boyega Confirms Talks for Star Wars Return as Finn

John Boyega has hinted he might reprise his role as Finn in future Star Wars films. He’s confirmed discussions are happening, which has thrilled fans who believe his character didn’t get enough screen time in the original trilogy.

John Boyega recently appeared at MEGACON Orlando. During a discussion with fans, he was asked if he might return as Finn in the Star Wars films. When a fan yelled for him to contact Dave Filoni, Boyega revealed that he already had.

It’s Time for John Boyega to Return as Finn

Boyega hasn’t revealed what he and Filoni discussed, which is understandable considering Disney and Lucasfilm keep things very confidential. Now that Filoni is in charge of creative at Lucasfilm, he’s the key person to speak with about potentially returning to the Star Wars universe. The fact that Boyega has already had these conversations with Filoni significantly increases the chances of seeing Finn back in future films or shows, though it’s still uncertain if or when that might happen.

Despite some criticism of the recent Star Wars sequels, many fans want John Boyega to reprise his role as Finn. While Finn was a key character in The Force Awakens (2015), he wasn’t given much to do in the following two films. There’s still a lot of potential in the character that hasn’t been explored, especially now with Dave Filoni overseeing new Star Wars projects. Boyega has even said he was disappointed with how Finn’s story developed after his first appearance.

In a 2020 interview with British GQ, John Boyega criticized Disney’s handling of his and Kelly Marie Tran’s characters in the Star Wars franchise. He said it was a mistake to introduce Black characters with the implication they’d be central to the story, only to then sideline them. He contrasted this with how Disney treated Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver, stating that the studio didn’t know what it was doing when it came to Tran and himself.

John Boyega Wanted More of Finn and Rey Together

John Boyega recently shared with fans at Fan Expo Boston that he initially envisioned a more significant role for Finn in the Star Wars sequels. However, Finn ended up becoming more of a lone character in The Last Jedi, while Rey received training from Luke Skywalker and ultimately confronted Palpatine.

I initially believed Finn had Force powers, starting around the time I finished reading the script for The Force Awakens. I expected a dynamic similar to Obi-Wan and Darth Vader – a conflict where Finn and another character would turn against each other.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really excited to hear Daisy Ridley is coming back as Rey in a new movie! Naturally, everyone’s started wondering if John Boyega might reprise his role as Finn, and it sounds like Daisy would absolutely love to work with him again – she said so back in 2024. While there haven’t been any official confirmations yet, the fact that John recently chatted with Dave Filoni has definitely got me thinking a Finn cameo is much more likely now. Fingers crossed!
