John Ashton, Beverly Hills Cop, Dead at 76

As a cinephile with a keen eye for character development and a soft spot for the underdog, I have always admired John Ashton’s career trajectory. From his humble beginnings in Springfield, Massachusetts, to gracing our screens as the gruff yet lovable Sergeant John Taggart, he truly embodied the spirit of Hollywood: a small-town boy making it big.

As a devoted fan, I’m saddened to share that John Ashton, famously recognized for his role as Sergeant John Taggart in the iconic Beverly Hills Cop series, has passed away at the age of 76. His manager confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter, stating it was due to cancer. Born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1948, Ashton earned his Bachelor of Arts in theater from USC. His initial on-screen credit, under the name John D. Ashton, was in the lesser-known 1973 horror film The Psychopath. This role marked his debut as a sergeant, setting the stage for his future roles in law enforcement. Over the years, he portrayed officers in numerous television and film projects, including another sergeant on Police Story, a border-patrol agent in Borderline, and the lead in the short-lived 1989 NBC buddy-cop series Hardball.

In the year 1984, Ashton made his most recognized character debut in the movie “Beverly Hills Cop”. He portrayed Sergeant John Taggart, a rough officer who initially had a rocky relationship with Eddie Murphy’s Detective Axel Foley. However, their bond eventually grew stronger. The character of Taggart proved vital to the franchise, appearing in the 1987 sequel “Beverly Hills Cop II” and the 2024 reboot titled “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F”. In his final on-screen appearance, Ashton remarked to The Nerds of Color in 2024 that going back for this role felt like a family reunion, as they easily picked up where they left off.
