The world of business, as depicted in “Industry”, is not for the sensitive or faint-hearted. Scenes involve bodily fluids being licked off mirrors, unrelenting shouting, and Harper Stern consistently facing the most pressure-filled decisions imaginable. This show specializes in shock value. It’s quite remarkable then, that even amidst such intensity, it still manages to catch viewers off guard when Joel Kim Booster appears nude during “It”, the third episode of the ongoing third season of “Industry”.
The actor and comedian’s work, like his movie Fire Island and his Netflix special Psychosexual, is known for taking on matters of sex with blunt realism, and he brought a similar frankness to his guest-starring role as a Pierpoint worker with the ability to make the Lumi investment sink or swim with his public report. Frank Wade, who is gossiped about before he appears, first shows up onscreen in a sauna with Harry Lawtey’s Robert, but there are really three characters present: Robert, Frank, and Frank’s penis. The erotic tension throughout the scene is as heavy as the steam, and part of the thrill comes not just from seeing a real, flaccid penis, but from seeing it beneath a familiar face.
Booster calls Frank, who only has a few minutes of screen time, “a low-density, high-impact character,” and he seems well aware of the reaction his full-frontal appearance will invite, if also a little incredulous. “Even the fact that we’re having this conversation is funny to me,” he says. “God knows I’ve been the one-episode guest star plenty of times before and I’ve never gotten press for it.”
How did you come to be involved with Industry? Well, it’s not entirely clear to me, but based on interactions with producers, it seems they appreciate my work. However, we haven’t explicitly discussed this; instead, it appears they approached me for a role in their show, which is unusual because it’s the first time I’ve been offered a part in something I genuinely enjoy and want to be a part of, career-wise.
Have you ever expressed your admiration for the series “Industry” publicly? If so, I’ve been a fan from its debut and may have shared my enthusiasm online, but we haven’t exchanged words prior to this.
When did the topic of full-frontal images arise?
At the same time, even if your nudes leak, it’s only gonna be gay guys who are looking at it.
Right, right. Yeah.
Does the wider reach of it influence your perspective in any way, or has it only come into consideration this past week following the leak of still images online?
That’s still probably only gay guys looking.
Yeah. The whole HBO viewing audience is gonna see my dick now. That came into play a little bit on the day of filming too, because it’s all well and good to say, “Whatever, if people really wanted to see my dick, it’s very easy to find my dick online.” But that’s also my hard dick. There’s a lot of variables with a flaccid penis that come into play in front of a whole crew of people. As soon as you start thinking about the state of your penis flaccid, you’re in this hole where it’s like, I have to stop thinking about it, because the more I think about it, the worse it’s gonna be presented. I was definitely in my head.
Harry has previously appeared nude in full view, which made it an absolute pleasure working with him on set. Throughout most of my scenes, he was nothing but gracious and kind, providing support because he understands that even when aiming for professionalism, such situations can feel strange and awkward. Despite being open about sexuality, I found this experience particularly vulnerable.
Despite identifying as sex-positive, one still navigates within the societal norms and stereotypes. For instance, I take pride in my physical attributes, including my manhood, which has generally been well-received throughout my life. However, being an Asian man, there’s the persistent joke about smaller-than-average male members. This thought suddenly crossed my mind: “Is it larger or smaller than people usually assume?” It wasn’t until I found myself in a nude setting that this aspect of my identity became more profound and required deeper introspection.
In what way did they make it clear that this was essential for the role?
How did it feel to shoot such an intensely sensual sequence? Our director, Zoé Wittock, handled it exceptionally well. She understands that it’s a delicate matter because she needs to respect my feelings on set while also treating it as any other scene from a directing perspective. Her approach was quite subtle in terms of direction. For this scene, most of the direction involved camera angles and editing rather than me and Harry. That was our final shot, and by that point, we had established a good working relationship, and our chemistry was already well-established.
In that scene, there’s a fascinating action you’re supposed to perform, which isn’t quite asking him outright, and later, the audience will be left pondering about the possible outcome if they had engaged in an intimate moment together. I’m unsure how they managed to convey this on screen, but in the original script, it seems like there might have been some suggestion of a romantic encounter.
That’s quite intriguing! I recall a previous conversation hinting at their relationship status, and now it seems to be either clarified further or left more mysterious. Either way, I find myself curious to learn more.
I was thinking they might have, but it appeared to me as if Robert decided not to incorporate his sexuality into the scene, which could potentially cause complications. Haven’t you received a preview of the episode yet?
“What key aspects or traits did you intend to convey about this character?”
It’s possible that the reason they chose me for this role was due to the natural air of self-assuredness my character possesses, which is a trait I’ve also attempted to incorporate into my stand-up personality. Interestingly, the characters I play in shows like “Industry,” “Fire Island,” and “Loot” are all more confident than I am off-screen, providing me with an empowering on-screen presence as an Asian man. I felt it was important to uphold this confidence.
Are you planning to watch it with X?
I’m considering signing off for today. I believe I possess an attractive physique, but others will undoubtedly voice their opinions about my body, which may be influenced by their feelings towards me as a person. I would characterize my physique as being in the gray area between “generally favorable” and “generally unfavorable,” since it’s currently not erect. At this point, people don’t have a clear idea of what it actually looks like when it’s active.
