The beloved fantasy board game HeroQuest, known for its dungeon-crawling adventures, is set to release a fresh expansion titled “The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack” on August 1st. Unlike previous expansions, this one has a distinctive allure: it was crafted by avid tabletop RPG enthusiast and actor Joe Manganiello (from Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Magic Mike, True Blood). Initially available only to backers supporting HeroQuest’s relaunch through crowdfunding, this expansion will soon be accessible to all players, inviting them on quests designed by Manganiello.
You can reserve Joe Manganiello’s The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack on Amazon at a price of $35. However, your local game store may have it available from July 15 before the official release date on August 1. To enjoy this expansion, you will require either a copy of HeroQuest Game System or HeroQuest: First Light.
For individuals new to HeroQuest, this game is essentially a simplified role-playing game in boardgame form, suitable for 2 to 5 players. One player assumes the role of the evil bosses and their troops, while the others choose from several predefined characters such as Barbarian, Wizard, Dwarf, or Elf, who navigate dungeons and accomplish quests. This results in a game that’s action-packed, emphasizing combat and exploration, yet easy to understand and play, while still retaining the personalization, narrative flow, and replay value of traditional pen-and-paper RPGs.
This game was first released in 1989, but it wasn’t available for purchase for quite some time until its comeback in the form of the HeroQuest Game System (2nd Edition), following a successful crowdfunding effort. Currently, you can buy it from Amazon for $91.60, which is almost as low as it’s been this year. Although there was a brief period when it was sold below $50 in early 2024, the price has consistently risen since then, not dipping below $85 since Black Friday. The price fluctuated between $90 and $110 throughout 2025 (up until now). It’s worth noting that the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price for HeroQuest is $135.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share an economical route to experiencing the latest expansion. Earlier this year, Avalon Hill unveiled “HeroQuest: First Light,” a compact, independent expansion offering all essential components. Although it comes with fewer quests, heroes, monsters, and dungeon pieces compared to its larger counterparts, it still delivers a thrilling gaming experience for an affordable $50.
Both HeroQuest Game System and First Light contain all necessary components to start playing, including rules to craft personalized adventures. However, there are additional official expansions available as well, such as the upcoming Crypt of Perpetual Darkness, which introduce fresh quests, new playable characters, bosses, tiles for the dungeon, and much more.
