Jodie Foster Embraces ‘Vie Privée’ Director as French Murder Mystery Gets 8-Minute Cannes Standing Ovation

At the premiere of “Vie Privée,” a mystery involving a psychotherapist suspecting her patient’s suicide was a murder, Jodie Foster received an eight-minute standing ovation on Tuesday night. After the screening, Foster warmly greeted director Rebecca Zlotowski. This film marks Foster’s first French role since 2004’s “A Very Long Engagement” and her return to filming in France since then.

Martina Foster has consistently graced the town of Cannes for many years during her illustrious career, with a recent appearance in 2021 to collect an Honorary Palme d’or award. Notably, some of her films have debuted at this prestigious festival – such as “Taxi Driver,” which took home the Palme d’or in 1976, and more recently, “Money Monster” (a thriller starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts) from 2016, as well as “The Beaver” (a drama featuring Mel Gibson), both of which she directed. Foster is fluent in French due to her time spent at the Lycée Français de Los Angeles during her youth.

The film titled “Vie Privée” blends multiple genres; it’s a mix of thriller elements, character exploration, and comedic aspects related to relationships. Written and directed by Zlotowski, who has previously worked on projects like “Grand Central” and “Planetarium”, the movie features Julia Foster alongside Daniel Auteuil, who portrays her ex-husband, and Virginie Edina, who plays a mysterious patient whose death initiates Foster’s investigation. Sony Pictures Classics will be in charge of distributing “Vie Privée” across North America.

Following a long hiatus from acting, Foster has been quite active in front of the camera lately. She received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress in 2023’s “Nyad” and won an Emmy for her portrayal as a troubled investigator in the 2024 series “True Detective: Night Country.
