Joaquin Phoenix Dropped Out Of M. Night Shylaman's Split Just 2 Weeks Before Filming

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate worlds of narrative-driven games, I can’t help but draw parallels between the cinematic universe and the virtual one. Just like in games, where sometimes the best characters are played by different actors due to unforeseen circumstances, the casting change in Split was a fascinating twist.

Initially, M. Night Shyamalan had planned for Joaquin Phoenix to headline his 2016 thriller “Split.” However, two weeks prior to filming, Phoenix decided to withdraw from the project. In a recent chat, James McAvoy, who stepped in for Phoenix, spoke about this peculiar turn of events.

On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, I (McAvson) praised Phoenix as an “extraordinary actor,” expressing that I would have approached the character differently from my Scottish counterpart. In Split, where I portray a man with 23 distinct personalities, it’s clear that meticulous preparation is crucial for delivering a convincing performance. However, joining the project at a late stage was surprisingly liberating, as it prevented me from over-preparing and potentially overwhelming myself.

He expressed that instead of my performance, he might deliver a remarkably exceptional one. He believes that performing at the last possible moment yields the best results, which is what he did, having only two weeks to prepare before filming began.

McAvoy stated that the Split script was so meticulously crafted that he found it relatively easy to grasp his role in the film, despite joining the project late. He admitted that a few characters required more time to fully comprehend, but overall, he felt comfortable navigating the production and delivering what Shyamalan and Blumhouse aimed for.

Previously, Phoenix had abandoned a project during pre-production, specifically a Todd Haynes romance film, only five days before shooting commenced. It is speculated that he will have to compensate with a substantial amount, possibly in the low seven figures, due to sets being constructed and the movie already being distributed, as he suddenly departed from the production.

As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that Istanbul serves as the chilling backdrop for McAvoy’s horror flick, Speak No Evil, currently gracing the big screen. On the other hand, the charismatic Phoenix is gearing up for his next grand performance in Joker: Folie à Deux, set to hit theaters this coming October.

Meanwhile, it’s worth mentioning that McAvoy, the actor, shared that he tried out for the Harry Potter film franchise, a role he ultimately declined.
