Joan Baez Pauses John Mulaney’s Talk Show to Slam ‘Incompetent Billionaires’ Running America: ‘Our Democracy Is Going Up in Flames’

During her performance at “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney” on Wednesday, Joan Baez delivered a firm statement concerning American politics.

Prior to narrating a tale that portrayed Martin Luther King Jr. as having a sense of humor, Baez took a moment to establish the background or context regarding the nature of today’s American leadership.

In this open space, I expressed my feelings freely, John,” I told him. “We’re here to laugh, to let loose, and yet, amidst the humor, it’s hard not to notice the alarming state our democracy finds itself in – being managed by a group of wealthy individuals who seem to be lacking in competence.

Though she didn’t explicitly say it, Baez seemed to be alluding to President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, who has been reducing government-funded projects through his Department of Streamlined Governance.

Later during the program, I shared that I briefly owned one of Elon Musk’s Tesla cars, following a suggestion from my assistant. However, I must admit, I don’t harbor warm memories of that brief episode in my life.

Baez expressed disdain for that item, but felt obligated to appreciate it. So he got behind the wheel and ended up crashing it into an oak tree on his land within 45 minutes…He thought, ‘This must be a message.’

In James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown,” Monica Barbaro recently played Baez. Barbaro and her co-star Timothée Chalamet, who portrayed Bob Dylan, were both recognized for their performances at the 2025 Academy Awards. However, neither of them won an Oscar.
