The newest episode of Season 3 includes a playful nod to a classic anime, with Yuji Itadori paying tribute to Son Goku from Dragon Ball Z.
Following the incredibly popular Episode 4, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3’s fifth episode has a lot to live up to. The previous episode, featuring Maki’s intense revenge mission reminiscent of Kill Bill, quickly became a hit with fans and earned a 9.8 rating on IMDb. While the series isn’t just focused on topping itself, the latest episode pays homage to classic shonen battle anime like Dragon Ball Z. It includes a direct reference to a famous scene from the 1995 film Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon, specifically a transformation sequence featuring Super Saiyan 3 Goku.
Yuji Itadori Shows Respect to DBZ: Wrath of the Dragon in JJK’s Newest Anime Episode
Season 3, Episode 5 of Jujutsu Kaisen has kicked off the highly anticipated “Culling Game” arc. Yuji and Fushigoro are searching for allies to help them in the battles ahead, which leads them to an underground fight club run by a strong former student of Jujutsu High, Hakari. To prove he’s not a spy for the school, Yuji decides to join the fight club. Fortunately, his first opponent turns out to be another Jujutsu High student secretly investigating the same operation: Panda.
Panda intentionally loses the fight, allowing Yuji to win and become motivated. This victory is visually presented with a camera angle, lighting, and Yuji’s pose that clearly echoes the iconic final pose of Super Saiyan 3 Goku from the movie Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon.
Goku’s iconic victory pose – raising his fist after defeating Hirudegarn with a single Dragon Fist – is clearly referenced in Season 3, Episode 5 of JJK. Although Yuji also raises his fist in triumph in the manga, the particular camera angle and direct homage to the Dragon Ball move is something that appears only in the anime adaptation.
The events before the Jujutsu Kaisen‘s nod to Dragon Ball Z also strongly resemble a classic DBZ moment. Yuji’s rapid punches on Panda, followed by Panda intentionally losing the fight, echo Mr. Satan’s controversial ‘victory’ over Android 18 during the World Tournament, which happened right before the Buu Saga.
In Dragon Ball Z Episode 226, titled “Pay to Win,” Mr. Satan attempts to defeat Android 18 with a series of punches during their final match in the World Tournament. However, his attacks don’t affect her at all. Android 18 then agrees to let him win if he pays her a large amount of money. Mr. Satan then performs his signature move, the Megaton Punch. After a noticeable delay, Android 18 dramatically jumps out of the ring, effectively forfeiting the match.
Recently, anime like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Demon Slayer have become very popular. Now, Dragon Ball is making a comeback this year with a remake of the Beerus Saga from Dragon Ball Super. Plus, a new arc of Dragon Ball Super is confirmed to be in production, adapting the highly anticipated Moro Saga from the manga. This will see Goku and Vegeta facing off against Moro, a powerful villain who devours planets.
New episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 are available on Crunchyroll every Thursday. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is scheduled to be released this fall, but an exact date hasn’t been revealed yet.
