As a long-time cinema devotee with a soft spot for comedies and political satire, I find myself deeply troubled by the current state of our nation’s discourse. The recent plea from Jimmy Kimmel to moderate Republicans echoes my own sentiments.
Ahead of Election Day next week, Jimmy Kimmel appealed sincerely to undecided Republican voters on Tuesday evening, urging them to think twice before voting for Donald Trump, and employing Trump’s own statements to illustrate why he should not regain the presidency.
Jimmy Kimmel, the host of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” used his opening monologue to reminisce on some peculiar and absurd statements he made over the past nine years. He encouraged viewers to consider the 2024 presidential election as being about maintaining “sanity, safety, and democracy.
Let me explain. It’s amusing, in a way, his unpredictable outbursts – but that’s acceptable if he was running a podcast or peddling farm goods. However, he holds a position of leadership, and people look up to him. At a time when the nation is becoming increasingly chaotic, his actions normalize irrationality.” This maintains the original meaning while using more formal and straightforward language.
Kimmel mentioned a strange theory circulating about Trump, suggesting that some people who were in Dallas hoped JFK Jr. and his father would return from the dead so they could be Trump’s running mate in 2024. In simpler terms, Kimmel compared Trump to the intersection where QAnon beliefs meet the shopping channel QVC.
Kimmel specifically requested viewers to invite their Republican friends and family members to watch his monologue as a personal courtesy. He paid tribute to “The Man Show,” the humorously immature, unscripted comedy series he co-hosted with Adam Carolla on Comedy Central from 1999 to 2004.
In case you don’t recall, I’m Jimmy Kimmel. You might be familiar with me from ‘The Man Show.’ We used to have a great time together – beer, trampolines, and all! Those were the good old days, weren’t they?
Kimmel admitted his part in the current political and cultural discord, directly acknowledging the bitter divisions tearing through the nation.
Currently, things aren’t as enjoyable as they used to be. We’re only a week away from an election, and there’s a lot of discord. It’s not solely due to Donald Trump; in fact, I must admit that I, too, contribute to this divisiveness. I often make fun of and demean people, which isn’t always constructive. Am I biased against Donald Trump? Absolutely. Do I believe I have solid reasons for my bias towards him? Yes. However, I may be mistaken – but I believe that once you understand some of those reasons, you might find yourself agreeing with me, even if it’s just a little bit.
Kimmel highlighted numerous individuals who were previously allied with Trump and held positions within his administration, but have since publicly denounced him in a firm manner. He mentioned the political event organized by Trump’s campaign at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, during which Tony Hinchcliffe made derogatory racial comments that sparked outrage among Puerto Rican voters.
If additional insight is required, I’d recommend watching his rally at Madison Square Garden or listening to the entire three-hour interview with Joe Rogan. Most elections usually revolve around policies. However, this election isn’t just about policies; it’s about mental stability, safety, and preserving our democratic system, as Kimmel pointed out.
“You know, I saw a shirt the other day it said, “I support Trump because he pisses off the people who piss me off. And it’s funny. And I get it. Sometimes it feels like no one has a sense of humor anymore. But is that really all we want for America? Is to piss each other off? I don’t want that.”
The monologue closed with Kimmel bringing out his longtime sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez to buttress his points that Trump’s radical agenda on immigration is anti-American.
Here’s Guillermo, who was once an immigrant but is now an American citizen. In celebration of our shared nationhood, let me propose a toast,” said Kimmel, raising large mugs of beer.
