Despite recent concerns, *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* will be back on the air. Disney announced on September 22nd that the show will return on Tuesday night, just a week after it was temporarily removed from ABC. This came after threats from the leader of President Trump’s Federal Communications Commission. Disney explained they paused production to de-escalate a sensitive situation following comments they felt were poorly timed. After discussions with Jimmy Kimmel, they decided to bring the show back on Tuesday.
On September 17th, ABC stopped production of Jimmy Kimmel’s show, right before taping was scheduled to begin. This decision followed attacks from far-right activists associated with the MAGA movement. They were upset by a statement Kimmel made on September 15th about people trying to distance themselves from a person who allegedly attacked Charlie Kirk, and using the situation for political gain. Following this, Brendan Carr, who leads the Federal Communications Commission and is a supporter of Donald Trump, hinted on a MAGA-aligned podcast that ABC’s local stations could face consequences from the government if they continued to air Kimmel’s show.
Several hours later, Nexstar, a major group of ABC stations, announced they would stop broadcasting *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* and continue to skip airing new episodes “for the foreseeable future,” hoping to de-escalate the situation. With another large station group, Sinclair, also planning to avoid the show, Disney executives Dana Walden and Bob Iger decided to temporarily remove *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* from ABC’s schedule while they considered their options. A key concern was that any further statements from Kimmel could intensify the backlash from conservative critics, making it more difficult to convince the stations to resume airing the program.
While Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension was concerning, Disney quickly signaled that ABC still wanted to bring his show back and was talking with Kimmel about a path forward. Throughout those discussions, and as public criticism grew regarding Bill Carr’s threats and Kimmel’s suspension, Kimmel remained notably silent. This silence seemed intentional – he prioritized keeping his show on the air through private negotiations rather than publicly expressing his anger. Ultimately, that strategy worked, and his show will continue, at least for now.
