In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Jimmy Kimmel was queried about modern comedy’s boundaries. This question led him to express his viewpoint that one reason Donald Trump has been re-elected is the growing trend of criticizing what comedians are allowed or not allowed to say.
Jimmy Kimmel stated that he doesn’t set boundaries for what makes him laugh. However, as he’s gotten older and more mature, he won’t tell a joke that he wouldn’t tell if the person being joked about was present. He believes this is how he should approach it. In his opinion, much of the anger and uproar is artificial, and many people who are angry aren’t genuinely upset. He thinks that some liberals who have been harshly criticizing comedians play a significant role in why Trump is currently president.
When asked to explain further, Kimmel added, “I believe that when people laugh at something together and someone enters the scene with crossed arms, criticizing it and explaining why it’s not funny, it creates an unpleasant impression. It makes you want to tell that person to loosen up a bit. Comedy isn’t about drawing clear lines; it’s subjective. What Dave Chappelle can joke about might be off-limits for someone else. I don’t think anyone should be ‘cancelled.’ I firmly believe in this.
Jimmie Kimmel is known for being a vocal critic of former President Trump, frequently using his late-night talk show to critique Trump’s actions and policies. In 2023, Rolling Stone published an article claiming that the Trump administration contacted ABC’s parent company Disney about Kimmel’s jokes directed at Trump. The White House reportedly urged Disney to restrict Kimmel’s speech.
Kimmel found it amusing when he heard the report,” Kimmel now responded. “I enjoy it when he acknowledges that I’m getting under his skin. Here on our show, where we put in a great deal of effort to satirize him, it’s quite rare for him to acknowledge our efforts. If he chose to ignore us, it wouldn’t be as entertaining.
Kimmel openly stated that a significant factor behind his persistent Trump-related humor is the ongoing disbelief he feels about Trump being elected president.
2016 marked the year he recalled having Hillary Clinton as a guest. During a commercial interlude, he said to her, “I hope Trump secures the nomination. I believe he’ll be an easy win for you.” To this, she responded, “Proceed with caution regarding your wish.” He admitted he wasn’t among those who anticipated Trump’s victory. Reminiscing about O.J. Simpson’s acquittal, he expressed a similar feeling of disbelief. His belief in America, which was deeply shaken, has yet to recover. He had faith that when push came to shove, this nation would do the right thing. Clearly, those days are behind us now.
