As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of binge-watching Saturday Night Live, I must say that last night’s cold open was nothing short of a delightful rollercoaster ride through the political landscape. Jim Gaffigan as Tim Walz brought a fresh, relatable charm to Studio 8H, reminding us all that even the most polished politicians started somewhere – in this case, Costco.

Last night, comedian Jim Gaffigan (playing Tim Walz) made his first appearance on Saturday Night Live, teaming up with Maya Rudolph portraying Kamala Harris during a mock campaign trail in Studio 8H. In a nod to Walz’s past, Gaffigan quipped, “I’ve got that BDE: Big Daddy Energy,” hinting at his upcoming impersonations and alluding to Walz’s background. He joked about his suit being from Costco, specifically the Kirkland brand, showcasing his frugality. Although Steve Martin reiterated his decision not to become an impressionist, Gaffigan donned his Costco attire, paving the way for more comedic collaborations to launch the season. Here’s a collection of every political impersonation from SNL’s cold open.

Andy Samberg as Doug Emoff

A significant team member, Andy Samberg (previously known as a cast member), stepped into the role of Doug Emoff, the VP’s husband. The duo shared intense eye contact before Samberg revealed his approach to playing the second gentleman this season. He humorously declared, “They call me a beta, a wife guy, a traditional husband, a little spoon because I openly support my wife. If being called a ‘little spoon’ helps Kamala, whom we affectionately refer to as ‘Momala’ in my family, become president, then go ahead and trim my small end.

James Austin Johnson as Donald Trump

Returning to the stage is current repertory player James Austin Johnson, reprising his Donald Trump impression for another election season. As Trump’s audience members started leaving during the “third hour” of the rally, Johnson recapped Trump’s eventful last couple of months, “Come back, we’re having fun. We love my rallies except when someone does a bing bong bing bing bing right at me,” while making a shooting motion. He basically made check marks on all of the big moments: the assassination attempt, falsely alleging that Harris isn’t Black, and the “they’re eating the dogs, they’re eating the cats” debate quote.

Bowen Yang as JD Vance

In a transformation that made him look particularly scaly, Bowen Yang donned some colorful contact lenses, outshining the damp character of Moo Deng in terms of leathery impressions for the night. Yet, his discourse on Project 2025 was abruptly ended by Harris’s dance moves.

Dana Carvey as Joe Biden

Making a surprise appearance is Dana Carvey as the former presidential candidate and current president, Joe Biden. He stumbled up to the podium to give us a taste of what the season would’ve looked like if he hadn’t dropped out of the race. “But guess what? And by the way… I think I did a really good job,” Carvey reminisces as his time as Biden comes to a close end. Rudolph thanked him for “handing over the reigns” as Biden did not want his time to be over. “I didn’t want to. They made me. And guess what?” he concludes before he mumbles off some more of Biden’s favorite phrases.
