Jim Carrey’s $302.7M Comedy Liar Liar Leaves Netflix

Jim Carrey first became famous in the 1990s with memorable movies like the Dumb & Dumber series and The Mask. He continued to build his comedic reputation in 1997 with the fantasy comedy Liar Liar, which grossed over $302.7 million worldwide in theaters.

I’m a big fan of Liar Liar, so I was a little bummed to hear it’s leaving Netflix on January 1, 2026. The movie is hilarious! Jim Carrey plays Fletcher Reede, a lawyer who’s famous for always lying and never keeping his promises, especially to his son. In the movie, his son Max makes a birthday wish that his dad can’t lie for a whole day, and it creates total chaos – but in a really funny way – with his job as a lawyer.

Starring Jim Carrey, Liar Liar also features Maura Tierney as his ex-wife Audrey, Cary Elwes as Jerry, and Jennifer Tilly as Samantha Cole, a client who is only interested in Fletcher’s money. Tom Shadyac, known for Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, directed the film, and Paul Guay (The Little Rascals) and Stephen Mazur (Benchwarmers 2: Breaking Balls) wrote the screenplay.

The fantasy-comedy has been well-received, earning an 83% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes based on 63 reviews. Audiences also seem to enjoy it, giving it a 75% rating from over 250,000 votes.

Carrey Played an Iconic Video Game Villain

After the hit movie Liar Liar, Jim Carrey’s career continued to thrive. Most recently, he returned as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), the latest installment in the video game film series. Director Jeff Fowler previously mentioned in an interview…

Jim Carrey had previously stated he’d only reprise his role in the Sonic movies if the script was exceptional. However, he ended up putting a lot of work into playing Dr. Robotnik in the newest film. Director Jeff Fowler explained that Carrey not only returned, but also worked twice as hard as before. As a joke, Fowler said they fulfilled Carrey’s request for a “golden script” by printing it with 24-karat gold ink and delivering it to his home.

Jim Carrey didn’t just play Dr. Ivo Robotnik in the Sonic movies – he also created and played Robotnik’s grandfather, Dr. Gerald Robotnik. Director Jeff Fowler was impressed by Carrey’s dedication, explaining that he fully embraced the opportunity to develop a brand-new character, paying attention to even the smallest details and even helping design the prosthetics. Fowler, who has now worked with Carrey on three films, described the experience as incredibly challenging and remarkable.

As a movie buff, I’m excited to hear you can now stream Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on Paramount+. But, heads up – if you’re a fan of Liar Liar, you’ll need to watch it on Netflix before January 1st, 2026, because it’s leaving the platform then.
