Jharrel Jerome, Zhao Tao Named Toronto International Film Festival Honorees – Film News in Brief

As a seasoned industry veteran with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that these announcements by the Casting Society and Costume Designers Guild have certainly piqued my interest! The 40th Annual Artios Awards at the glamorous Beverly Hilton in February 2025 promises to be an event not to miss. Destiny Lilly, as CSA President, has her work cut out for her, but I’m confident she’ll lead the charge with grace and determination.

The acclaimed actor and rapper, Jharrel Jerome, along with the celebrated actress Zhao Tao, have been chosen as recipients of the Toronto International Film Festival‘s Tribute Awards.

Jerome is set to get the TIFF Tribute Performer Award, whereas Tao will be honored with the TIFF Special Tribute Award.

Actor Jerome, who starred in “Moonlight” and “When They See Us,” is coming back to the festival for the premiere of William Goldenberg’s “Unstoppable: The Anthony Robles Story.” In this film, he portrays Robles. Tao, ranked 8th among the 25 best actors of the 21st century by the New York Times in 2020, has previously collaborated with director Jia Zhang-Ke on critically acclaimed films such as “Still Life” and “Mountains May Depart” (TIFF ’15). She will again be at the festival for the North American Premiere of “Caught by the Tides,” where she delivers a central performance as Qiaoqiao.

“Jharrel Jerome’s captivating performances in ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Unstoppable’ have solidified his status as one of this generation’s most talented actors. It is a pleasure to present him with the TIFF Tribute Performer Award for his exceptional acting portfolio,” said Cameron Bailey, TIFF CEO in a statement. “In her collaborations with director Jia Zhang-Ke, Zhao Tao, our TIFF Special Tribute honoree, has beautifully portrayed the intricacies and impact of China’s transformative evolution. Her face is a defining symbol of the 21st century, and ‘Caught by the Tides’ ranks among her greatest works.”

The TIFF Tribute Awards gala will take place on Sept. 8 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.

Their accomplishments will serve as a benchmark for upcoming generations of media composers and lyricists.”

At the SCL New York Holiday Party taking place on December 4th, I’ll be bestowing the well-deserved honors upon this year’s esteemed Ambassador recipients.
