Jet Li, Chow Yun-fat Films Lead Shout! Studios’ Hong Kong Cinema Classics Label

For fans of action movies and collectors of physical media, Shout! Studios is introducing a new label focused on reissuing classic Hong Kong films that have been meticulously restored.

The collection of timeless classics from Hong Kong cinema will shine a light on some of the region’s greatest film productions, starting with digital 4K versions available in June, followed by more comprehensive editions in physical format at a later date.

The action is taken following Shout! Studios acquiring global distribution rights (with exceptions in certain Asian regions) for the prestigious Golden Princess film collection.

The digital launch commences on June 24th, while the label’s inaugural physical release is scheduled for July 29th – “The Jet Li Collection,” a deluxe 10-disc 4K UHD and Blu-ray set. This extensive collection encompasses five of the martial arts legend’s most significant Hong Kong films: “Fist of Legend,” “Tai Chi Master,” “Fong Sai Yuk,” “Fong Sai Yuk II,” and “The Bodyguard from Beijing.” The premium set offers new interviews, audio commentaries, classic documentaries, and additional special features.

The Hong Kong Cinema Classics project highlights iconic action films from Hong Kong during the ’80s and ’90s, a time known for its exhilarating fight sequences, unique aesthetics, and heartfelt narratives. These movies have long been unavailable or out-of-print outside of Asia for many years.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been part of an exciting collaboration between Shout! Studios and the Hong Kong Film Archives. Together, we’ve been meticulously remastering and restoring a wealth of titles in pristine 4K quality, using original camera negatives for scanning, ensuring the best possible video and audio restoration. Plus, these classics now come with newly translated subtitles to make them more accessible than ever!

Starting June 24, John Woo’s films “Hard Boiled” featuring Chow Yun-Fat and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, as well as Ringo Lam’s “City on Fire” with Chow Yun-Fat, Sun Yueh, and Danny Lee, will kick off their digital release. On July 8, you can look forward to John Woo’s “A Better Tomorrow” series. After a short break, Tsui Hark’s “Peking Opera Blues” and another of John Woo’s masterpieces, “The Killer,” will be released on July 22. The digital releases continue with Tony Ching’s “A Chinese Ghost Story” trilogy on Aug. 5, followed by John Woo’s “Bullet in the Head” on Aug. 19.

In terms of physical releases, starting July 29, “The Jet Li Collection” box set will debut, followed by Ringo Lam’s “City on Fire” on Aug. 26 and Tsui Hark’s “Peking Opera Blues” on Sept. 23. Both titles will come as 4K UHD + Blu-ray combo packs. These releases will be numbered for collectors, with the five Jet Li films being labeled HKCC #1 to HKCC #5, “City on Fire” as HKCC #6, and “Peking Opera Blues” as HKCC #7.

Shout! Studios intends to keep on sharing more Hong Kong Classic Films, both digitally and physically, after this initial collection.
