In the final episode of The Last of Us season 2, Jesse’s demise might be overlooked due to the intense, fast-paced action, making the details somewhat blurry. However, in episode 7 of this season, Ellie’s quest for retribution reaches its climax. Following her release from the hospital, Ellie teams up with Jesse to locate Tommy. In a bid to ensure Dina receives necessary medical care, Ellie agrees to put her vengeful mission on hold and return home. Yet, unbeknownst to Jesse, Ellie is secretly plotting to pursue Abby and exact her revenge before departing.

In a different phrasing, when Jesse accompanies Tommy to the marina for assistance, Ellie detaches herself to penetrate Abby’s aquarium lair instead. Jesse Is Dead After Taking A Gunshot To The Head

In the theater lobby, Ellie and Jesse suddenly appear following some noise, only to encounter Abby who’s cornered Tommy. To their dismay, Abby is brandishing a weapon and has taken hostage. In an instant, Abby starts shooting, forcing Ellie to take shelter. When Ellie peeks up, she sees Jesse, lifeless with a gunshot wound on his face. Regrettably, the injuries sustained in this encounter will prove fatal for Jesse. Although there’s a possibility he may reappear through flashbacks during future seasons of The Last of Us, Jesse won’t recover from this gunshot wound.

To date, Ellie’s pursuit for vengeance has resulted in much heartache. Tommy had to abandon his spouse and child for her safety, Dina was wounded by an arrow, and her unborn baby is critically endangered. However, the most devastating outcome has been Jesse’s demise. Ellie ventured to Seattle because she struggled to cope with the death of a cherished individual, and now, another dear person has been lost due to this journey.

Jesse’s Death In The TV Show Is Practically A Shot-For-Shot Recreation Of The Game

In the video game The Last of Us Part II, Jesse experiences the same tragic outcome as in the television series. Following their return to the theater with Ellie and planning their journey home, Tommy is ambushed by Abby. In the ensuing chaos, Ellie and Jesse rush into the lobby, where Abby reflexively opens fire, striking Jesse fatally in the head. Overwhelmed by grief, Ellie discards her weapon and yields to Abby, sparing Tommy from suffering a similar fate. This sequence closely mirrors events from the game.

In the game, Jesse is sympathetic towards Ellie, whereas in the TV series, he criticizes her for her actions. While it’s understandable that Ellie might act impulsively given the traumatic loss she experienced, Jesse in the show often scolds her for her recklessness and selfishness. This contrast can seem unfair to some, especially considering that the person Ellie lost was brutally killed before her eyes.

The resemblance between the image of young Mazino’s Jesse, lying dead, and the Jesse from the game, also deceased, is striking.
