Jesse L. Martin Teases Musical Moment in ‘The Irrational’ Season 2

As a reviewer with a penchant for both science and theater, I found myself eagerly anticipating Season 2 of “The Irrational.” Jesse L. Martin, who I’ve admired for his stellar work on Broadway, particularly as Tom Collins in “Rent,” is now gracing our screens as Alec Mercer.

As a supporter, I’m excited about my role transitioning from a scientist to a performer in the second season of NBC’s “The Irrational,” premiering on October 8th.

Jesse L. Martin, the actor portraying behavioral scientist-turned-FBI consultant Alec Mercer at night, might employ his vocal talents in a future episode.

He clarifies that it’s no secret that he adores Broadway and has even had the opportunity to perform in a musical or two, one of which was particularly memorable. Notably, Martin gained significant fame for his role as Tom Collins in the Broadway adaptation of ‘Rent,’ where his exceptional singing abilities really shone.

Martin playfully hinted about Alec’s past involvement in a college singing group, but he jokes that the scholar and mature version of Alec doesn’t envision himself in that role, particularly for public display. However, Martin playfully promises that those eager to see or hear some singing might get their wish, but it will come from a scientist. I’m not sure what it means when scientists sing, but that’s something you’ll soon find out.

Alec’s private life remains intertwined with his profession, as there are several significant females present in his life, both at home and within his workplace.

Alec often finds himself in risky situations due to his work, even before he met Rose. The possibility of danger that Rose faces with her job, combined with their romantic and professional entanglement, creates some intriguing and complex tales, he notes about Rose (Karen David). Regarding his past relationship with Marisa (Maahra Hill), Martin assures there won’t be a love triangle, but their stories will overlap instead.

Additionally, Phoebe (Molly Kunz) remains an important part of Alec’s life.

Phoebe isn’t leaving the show Molly, according to Martin. He won’t reveal where her character goes or what she does next, but he thinks everyone is glad about it since Phoebe is an invaluable cast member and a terrific actress. Phoebe brings so much depth to these stories that we can’t do without her, and Alec particularly needs her.” (speaking to EbMaster)

“The Irrational,” produced by Universal TV, airs on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET. on NBC.
