Jerry Trainor gave a spectacular performance during his audition for the iconic role of “Crazy Steve” on the popular Nickelodeon series, “Drake and Josh.
At GalaxyCon’s conversation, Trainor shared the story behind his acquisition of the character Crazy Steve – a theater worker known for his fiery outbursts, quick to lose his temper even over minor hassles, which often included arguments with co-stars Drake Bell and Josh Peck.
When I tried out for the role of Crazy Steve, it had already been given to someone else. However, apparently, the actor who initially got the part wasn’t ‘crazy’ enough for the producers, so they let him go.
Trainor received a quick call for an urgent tryout, as the casting team for “Drake and Josh” required someone to fill the part immediately.
He explained about his acting background at the moment, saying, “At that point, I’d just graduated from college with a theater major. They were always telling me to dial back, to scale it down, to play it cool. It was all about subtlety, understatement, and beneath-the-surface acting.
During the audition, Trainor stated that he initially portrayed the character as “peaceful, and then I lose control.” Nevertheless, the casting director desired a more intense performance and inquired, “Wow, could you amp it up even more?” To which Trainor complied.
So, I took things to an even more extreme level, and she asked for more. I responded, ‘I’d advise you to halt right there.’ I told her I could go all out, ‘nuclear’. She wanted something huge, so I said she didn’t want that. But she insisted, saying ‘That’s exactly what we require.’ So, I agreed and delivered as asked. The rest, they say, is history.
Initially, Trainor made his debut as “Crazy Steve” in the second season of “Drake and Josh”, and later featured in a total of eight episodes. Additionally, he portrayed the quirky brother of popular Nickelodeon personality Carly Shay in “iCarly”. This series spanned over six seasons, airing from 2007 to 2012, with a grand total of 93 episodes.
