Jeremy Renner Says Robert Downey Jr. Kept His Marvel Return a Secret From the Original ‘Avengers’ Cast: ‘The Son of a B—- Didn’t Say Anything!’

As a movie critic with a penchant for action-packed Marvel epics and a soft spot for the camaraderie between its iconic characters, I find myself thoroughly enthused by the latest developments in the MCU. The return of Robert Downey Jr., who played the charismatic Iron Man alongside Jeremy Renner’s gritty Hawkeye, is not just exciting news but a testament to the enduring appeal of these superhero tales.

More recently, Jeremy Renner revealed to US Weekly that he was taken aback by the news about Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Renner’s character Hawkeye and Downey’s Iron Man shared screen time in various Marvel films since 2008’s “The Avengers.” Despite their ongoing friendship, Downey chose not to inform Renner or any of the original “Avengers” cast (Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson) about his upcoming role as the antagonist Doctor Doom.

“Oh, I had no clue! He never mentioned a thing to me, not even a whisper. We’re close pals and part of the same Avengers group chat, yet he kept silent. The original six of us. I couldn’t believe it when I discovered this secret from him. So, I jumped online and bombarded his phone with messages like, ‘What’s the scoop? Why have you been keeping this a secret all this while?’ I’m genuinely thrilled about the news. I can hardly contain my excitement!”

It’s possible that Downey isn’t the only Marvel character making a comeback in the upcoming “Avengers” films titled “Avengers: Doomsday” (2026) and “Avengers: Secret Wars” (2027). Jeremy Renner, who last appeared in the MCU during the “Hawkeye” series on Disney+, hinted to US Weekly that he’s likely to rejoin the Avengers team and engage in a confrontation with Downey’s character, Doctor Doom. However, nothing is set in stone at this stage.

“Jeremy Renner stated that having Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers involved again indicates a promising direction for Marvel. The Avengers films have always been popular among fans, and there are so many intriguing characters within them. It will be difficult to gather everyone, but I’m excited about it. We’ll have to wait and see. I believe we’ll likely be moving forward with it. Everything is fresh and new; they just announced it, so they need to work out the details.”

Since the 2023 snow plow accident, Jeremy Renner hasn’t appeared as Hawkeye. The incident required hospitalization for injuries such as blunt chest trauma, multiple broken ribs, a fractured left tibia, a broken left ankle, a broken right clavicle, and a broken right shoulder, among others. However, Renner recently shared with Entertainment Tonight that his rehabilitation is progressing well enough to enable him to play Hawkeye again in the future.

“Renner expressed his readiness for rejoining the Marvel universe, stating he’ll undoubtedly be up to the task. He added that the Marvel team has been by his side throughout his recovery, so if they need him, he’s at their disposal. It would be a great opportunity for him.”
