Jeremy Renner shared in his newly released memoir, “My Next Breath,” that he felt like he had died for a brief period after his near-fatal snow plow accident on New Year’s Day 2023. In a recent podcast interview with Kelly Ripa on “Let’s Talk Off Camera,” Renner, an Academy Award nominee, referred to this experience as a sense of profound relief.
Renner expressed that it’s incredibly liberating to be released from one’s physical form. He described this sensation as an indescribably thrilling tranquility. Everything you perceive is a product of your imagination, and you become the very essence of who you are – your atoms, DNA, and spirit. It’s like experiencing the ultimate adrenaline rush, yet with a peace that follows… it’s breathtakingly beautiful. It’s as if magic has taken hold.
Renner went on to say, ‘I didn’t want to return,’ but I was forced to do so and I was furious. Upon my return, I sighed, ‘Oh dear!’ Then I saw my eye and thought, ‘Oh no, I’m back.’ After that, I looked at my legs and thought, ‘This is going to hurt later.’ I took a deep breath and said to myself, ‘Alright, let me keep breathing.’
In his book, Renner recounted that on January 1, 2023, he experienced being run over by a massive snow plow known as a Sno-Cat, which weighs at least 14,330 pounds. This incident caused him to briefly lose consciousness. He was later admitted to the hospital due to severe chest trauma and orthopedic injuries. His injuries were extensive: he had eight ribs fractured in fourteen places, a broken right knee, ankle, left leg tibia, and ankle, a broken right clavicle and shoulder, among others.
In the book, he expresses that he had a vision of his entire lifetime. To him, death seemed to erase the concept of time, yet it was also as if it encompassed all time and eternity. Speaking with Ripa, Renner explained that this experience left him feeling like someone who didn’t wish to return, allowing him to truly be present and live life according to his own will. He can now get on or off the ship of life whenever he wants, with no regard for others’ expectations. This newfound clarity has cleared away the background noise in his life.
Since completing over a year of recovery, Renner has resumed acting by featuring in his Paramount+ original drama series “Mayor of Kingstown.” Additionally, he has filmed a role for Rian Johnson’s upcoming “Knives Out” movie titled “Wake Up Dead Man,” which will be released in cinemas and on Netflix this fall.
