2023’s New Year’s Day brought a dramatic shift for the twice-Oscar-nominated individual, as he endured a devastating snowplow mishap that fractured over 30 bones and inflicted severe chest trauma. In a recent article for a popular magazine, Renner is candidly discussing the accident from two years ago that came perilously close to taking his life. Renner attributes the incident to a minor error in judgment, which narrowly avoided being fatal.
According to Renner, he neglected to perform a crucial step as outlined in the snowplow’s user manual: applying the parking brake before leaving the driver’s seat. The manual explicitly states, “Before exiting the driver’s cab! – Apply parking brake.” However, in that fateful instance, I overlooked engaging the parking brake and disengaging the steel tracks. That seemingly insignificant lapse of memory would irrevocably alter the trajectory of my life from that moment onwards, as Renner described in his writing.
In a terrible incident, he was tragically run over by an out-of-control snowcat, causing significant internal bleeding and chest trauma. Remarkably, he managed to save his nephew, Alex Fries, from being crushed under the plow during the accident.
“So Many Things to Live For”
13 months post his accident, in January 2024, the star expressed gratitude for having numerous reasons to live. He boasted a large family and a ten-year-old daughter. If he had perished, he would have let down many people and caused much distress. Therefore, there’s a great deal for him to recover and improve. Moreover, being quite obstinate, he has much to battle for, he asserted.
In another conversation, the actor playing the Mayor of Kingstown mentioned that “Currently, I’m engrossed in writing a book about this journey. I’ve been perfecting the final draft, so it’s still quite fresh on my mind as I often try to distance myself from it.
